our many activities, family team members, Wine Club deliveries/pick up parties, upcoming events, live music events and our newest wines!
In this Issue: As we pass the middle of Summer, we explore the transition from bottling to harvesting. Learn how we treat things differently, what is happening to the grapes in the vineyard and why we've decided to move towards using a sugarcane cork. Also included is an update from the Tasting Room, details on the next wine club shipment, a feature article on the new 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and our first Winemaker Bio of for Ed Seikel!
Véraison! by Operations Manager, Joe Salman
This is an exciting time of year in the vineyard with the grapes softening and turning color. The French term for this Véraison signifies the onset of ripening. Red grapes start by going from the hard green berries to pink and purples. White grape varieties may turn a pale yellow or stay green, but be much softer to the touch. Not all varieties start Véraison at the same time, in fact as I write this I see a change in many varieties but not at all in Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. So it is pretty easy to see what grapes will make it to the finish line first.
Besides the obvious colorful change the grape berries also increase in volume, weight, and sugar content. Directly around the winery Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvigon, come see for yourself.
From Bottling to Harvest, with a Sugarcane Cork!
By Winemaker Ed Seikel
Now that the final bottling of the year is behind us and the remaining wines are in barrel aging, things are finally beginning to settle down as we start to prepare for the upcoming harvest. So instead of going over what's been happening this month in the cellar, I'd like to get into our decision to move away from natural cork closures.
Many of you have probably already noticed that our closures have a different look and feel. That's because they are actually made from sugarcane as opposed to cork. So why did we make the move away from cork? These new closures give us a level of consistency and control that just couldn't be achieved with the natural cork. They impart no foreign flavors or aromas. We can control the amount of oxygen that can pass through to the wine and have it be consistent bottle to bottle. There's also no fear of ever selling a "corked" bottle when you're not using cork! If that wasn't enough, since they are produced from sugar cane rather than cork they have a zero carbon footprint and are even recyclable.
In the end we're better able to ensure that when you open up a bottle of our wine at home it's exactly what we were envisioning while making it.
Grand Island Vineyards Tasting Room is Hoppin'
By Tasting Room Manager Tess Johnson
What a fun summer it's been! Sangria Saturday at Grand Island Vineyards was definitely a day of fun for the entire family. The GIV friends and family had games, picnicking, wine and of course a build your own Sangria area complete with fruit grown from Salman Farms! The
Sangria was a big hit but many preferred my Sangria made with the
, with orange flavored sparkling water and a splash of simple syrup. Delicious!
Don't forget to join us for the event
of the month, GIV After Dark.
This month it is our pleasure to have the musical talents of Tressa Gaye and friends. Wine is pouring from 5-9p and the music is playing from 5:30-8:30p. Bring yourself, friends and snacks! It's always a grand time to be had at Grand Island Vineyards!
GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Winemaker Ed Seikel!
Meet Grand Island Winemaker Ed Seikel! Ed was born in Akron, Ohio and attended Harvey S. Firestone High School and currently lives in Sacramento, over in Curtis Park with his lovely wife Katie. Besides being one of GIV's fabulous Winemakers, Ed also does Vine to Bottle Technical Consulting for other wineries. Having graduated from Bowling Green with a Double Major in Chemistry and Biology, Ed also attended UC Davis Graduate School with a ph-d in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology! This Brainiac, along with partner in crime David Shattuck who we will profile in future editions, is a large reason why we are so very pleased with the quality of our fabulous wines. And crops. And pretty much everything else.
Before being an extraordinary winemaker, Ed worked as a Lab Manager for the Clarksburg Wine Company where he came to love Grand Island Vineyards while working with GIV/Salman fruits. Ed often likes to say it was the quality of the fruit which caught his attention, thanks to both Joe and Enver Salman's tireless efforts. His personal favorite GIV wine, which is saying a lot, is the Sauvignon Blanc and his favorite non-GIV wines are the 2010 CWC Cab Reserve from the Salman Home Ranch and Evil Twin Heretic Beer. In typical friends and family style, Ed likes to enjoy his wine (and beer) during a BBQ with family and friends. Destined for greatness, Ed was born at the same hospital as Lebron James and Stephen Curry and used to race jet skis in his spare time.
Featuring the 2015 Cabernet Franc!
By Grand Island Winemaker Ed Seikel
Our featured wine this month is our 2015 Cabernet Franc. This is the first wine to be produced and bottled for three vintages here at GIV. As a Bordeaux varietal, it is typically blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but can yield a wonderful varietal wine on it's own. It can also be found in the Loire Valley, where it is bottled as a Chinon. Typically it yields a lighter bodied wine than Cabernet Sauvignon, with a more peppery aroma along with higher acidity. Its naturally higher acidity and lower tannin levels make it an easy wine to pair with a wide variety of foods. But where it can really shines is at a BBQ or with more piquant meats like venison, lamb, and duck.
Those who came out for the Father's Day tasting event have already had a chance to try this wine, and everyone will get a chance very soon as it will be in the next wine club shipment and coming to the tasting room.. Fans of our past Cabernet Franc should keep an eye out for a special vertical flight box including a bottle of each of our vintages of Cabernet Franc, available in limited quantities this holiday season.
