Vineyard News
" Certified Green " Vineyard News
by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

One of more special things about our farming business is how it interacts with the nature and how understanding this interaction can not only benefit the environment, but also benefit the vines and grapes we are growing.  There are many such examples of this, but one that I am very fond of is the symbiotic relationship between owls and vineyards.

Besides the barn owls that live in many of our old barns and tractor sheds, we have built and erected many owl nesting boxes to increase the population.  Why have we done this?  Two reasons: one, I really think owls are a very interesting bird with many fascinating abilities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_FEaFgJyfA

The other reason, I hate mice. There are large agricultural losses reach year to due to rodents, plus I just don't approve of anything entering my house without an invitation.

My wife calls me a nerd for watching owl documentaries, but the coolest thing is I get to see them quite often, especially at night harvest.  When we are working so are they, so excuse these pictures I snapped back in September on my camera phone.

From these young screechy Barn Owls to the hooty Great Horned Owls on the end post, these fine feathered friends are awesome allies of mine and because of them and the other nature friendly tactics; Grand Island Vineyards is a Certified Green vineyard through the Lodi Wine Grape Commission and the Lodi Rules/California Rules program.

More on Certified Green in future newsletters.

News from the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium
By Winemaker Ed Seikel

This month was the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium. Every year since 1995 the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the California Association of Winegrape Growers have worked together to bring us the largest wine industry event in North America, which happens to be right here at the Sacramento Convention Center!

The event consists of two main parts: the trade show, and the symposium. The symposium includes the annual State of the Industry presentation as well as a wide variety of talks ranging from marketing strategies for tasting rooms to technical exhibits about grape growing. The trade show takes up all of the main show floor with the hundreds of vendor booths. The products being represented include winery software, bottles and corks, marketing material, and even full size mechanical harvesters and winery equipment such as presses for demonstrations. In fact, our press that you all read about here in the cellar news over harvest was actually picked up by the vendor and brought in to the event! David and I were very happy about that because part of the deal was that they would do the yearly deep cleaning and maintenance on it.

Overall it's a great event to meet vendors in person, ask questions and learn about new products and techniques, and network with others in the industry.

Say Hello to Winemaker David Shattuck

Meet the other fabulous Grand Island Winemaker David Shattuck! David has been working with partner Ed Seikel since January 2017 in creating new and wonderful Grand Island and BRIDGEHEAD wines.  David lives in Davis with wife Jamie and Bret their Shetland Sheep dog since 2003, where he graduated (from Davis) with a degree in Bio Chemistry. Before this, David lived in Livermore and Denver, Colorado.

Previous past work includes working at Lawrence Livermore Labs with many of our customers, at Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale working on military lasers and then winemaker in Clarksburg. David met partner winemaker Ed in 2004 at Davis, during a recruitment weekend at Davis.

His favorite wine from Grand Island Vineyards is the newest Cab Franc (2016) and his favorite non-Grand Island wine is the Domaine Joel Delaunay Loire Sauvignon Blanc. David enjoys his wine in the process of making and eating dinner and while fishing, as he is an AVID salt water fly fisherman. David came to love Grand Island Vineyards through working with the grapes and the wine as far back as 2010 and really loved the vineyards.  Stop by and meet David if you get the chance, you'll be glad you did!

New Type of Wine, the BRIDGEHEAD Velluto!
By Winemaker David Shattuck

This month, we are very excited to debut a new type of wine for Grand Island Vineyards.  We are releasing our first dessert wine for Valentine's weekend and will have some blends of the next vintage to vote on as well.

The 2016 BRIDGEHEAD Velluto is made from Petite Sirah grapes and was fortified with neutral grape spirits.  The initial aroma is a heady mixture of ripe blueberries and blackberries, earth, and cloves.  This dessert wine is pleasantly sweet with a  hint of tannin and alcohol to provide balance to the ripe fruit flavors.  The understated acidity keeps the wine finishing clean and bright with no cloying notes.

The Velluto is the perfect finish to any evening that involves Grand Island Vineyard's wine.

Grand Island Featured in Delta Living Magazine
By Writer Dennis Hall - Delta Living Magazine

We are very excited about the featured article of Grand Island Vineyards in this month's Delta Living Magazine.  Writer Dennis Hall captures the heart and essence of Grand Island through photos and offers a wonderful review of the vineyards, winery and grounds. Titled Delta Bridges Honored through Wines, this article details the surrounding area and iconic bridges surrounding the Delta community.

Grand Island has long honored the Steamboat Slough Bridge through it's BRIDGEHEAD line, referring to the massive counterweight structure which was built in 1924. The bridge is seen from the tasting room and has been artistically showcased by local artist Dan Harris of Courtland.  To view this article, click here and join the celebration of the Delta community!
