Vineyard News
Babies and Bloom,  by Joe Salman

Want to see a new vineyard of baby vines in development?  Then come to the winery!  This winter we marked, staked, and planted a new vineyard adjacent to the winery.  The vines: Petit Verdot, which we plan to be a part of a reserve Cabernet Blend in the future, and also Primitivo, which we plan to be a part of the BRIDGEHEAD RED in the future.  More to come in future newsletters ......

On the mature side of things,  the older vines are in bloom.  Maybe not quite as beautiful as your roses, but it is a flower, that (self) pollinates, that produces a fruit (grapes), that we make into wine, that you love to drink.  I don't think you are drinking anything from your rose bushes.

Stylistic Tasting at Grand Island Vineyards
by Winemaker David Shattuck

This month in the cellar we were working on refining a style for the 2017 Chardonnay for Grand Island Vineyard.  It is both important and fun to frequently taste a wide range of styles of any grape varietal in order to decide on what kind of wine we want to make. Ed and I sat down with Joe, Tess, and Mel to taste through twelve different Chardonnays.  The styles ranged from unoaked and highly acidic French wines to soft,  buttery California Chardonnay.

Based on the results of the tasting, we are very excited to go into the harvest with a plan to create a fruit forward and well balanced Chardonnay that we can all look forward to being in the tasting room by next summer.

Happy Birthday to Grand Island Vineyards!
by Tasting Room Manager Tess Jonson

Can you believe it? Our tasting room has officially been open for one year. I guess time flies when you're tasting wine!  If you read the newsletter last month we mentioned shoot thinning. Well, we decided to have a little competition with our staff. Each one of our wine ambassadors picked a vine and went to work, soon we will see who's vine produces the most fruit. You should come out, take a peek and see who's winning. I think it's me!

We also had the pleasure of hosting a charity event for Xhope missions, a charity who's mission is to empower the at risk child by providing hope, love, education and a forever family. Xhope was ecstatic to have David Garibaldi, an American performance painter, as their special guest. He was absolutely breathtaking. Garibaldi painted four canvas' which were all auctioned off for Xhope missions. Outright magnificent night had by all.

family GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Melanie "Mel" Jonson

Grand Island Vineyards has been lucky to have Mel on the GIV team since the end of 2016. Mel lives in Courtland and graduated Delta High School before attending Cosumnes River College as an art major, which is awesome, because Mel does all the wonderful chalkboard art featured at the Winery. Combining this with the fact that her family grows grapes as well, it's no wonder her highly qualified opinion results in telling guests and the public that the GIV wine is absolutely delicious! Mel knows the Courtland area well, having worked at Giusti's in the Delta and training many area dogs. She also worked at Northstar as a lift operator in her spare time. Mel chose GIV for a few interesting reasons, including the Wine Club Manager is her sister, Gayle is her mother, the Salman family has known her since kindergarten AND she went to school with Courtney. Her favorite GIV wine is the New Winemakers Blend with the Rosé as a close second; her favorite non-GIV wine is the Runquist Petite Sirah which pleasantly is made with Salman Grapes!

Mel enjoys taking a bottle and going out to dinner with friends, and loves Grand Island because the people are all friendly and likable, the staff are personable and easy to get along with in a great environment to learn new things every day.

Introducing the Grand Island Sauvignon Blanc!

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular white wine varietals in the United States and across the globe, with over 275,000 acres planted worldwide, and its popularity is well earned from the distinctly crisp and refreshing wine it produces.  Sauvignon Blanc originated in the Bordeaux region of France, where the vine paired with Cabernet Franc to parent one of the world's most widely recognized varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon. Bursting with tart green apple, citrus, and ripe peaches and finishing with a cool minerality this wine is outstanding when paired with food or enjoyed on its own.  Our 2016 Sauvignon Blanc will be the featured wine at our One Year Anniversary Party on Saturday May 27th and Sunday May 28th so come join us and discover why this varietal is celebrated the world over!

Currently the Grand Island Sauvignon Blanc is available as an exclusive Wine Club Member Wine in our online store for the discounted price of only $12.75. This limited batch creation from our fabulous wine makers is also the "Featured" wine in the May Wine Club shipment/Pickup Party.
