HARVEST - IT IS OVER!
by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

Well, like all harvests there were wins and losses, ups and downs, good and bad. After a solid couple months of harvesting, I am done.  Heat waves, breakdowns, and long hours did not break our spirit (too much anyway).  Since my last harvest journal entry to you we finished out the year harvesting: Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Harvest Dinner was a nice distraction to the final days of harvest when we wanted the harvest just to be over.  Yields were lower than average and as for the quality I will let the winemakers let you know what they think.  Fall is here, but don't worry I am not going on a 6 month vacation.  I'll let you know what we do after harvest next month.

Harvest Winds Down, Pressing Begins!
By Winemaker Ed Seikel

As harvest finally begins to wind down, we come to our final and most important piece of harvest equipment: the press.  While there are many different variations of presses, ours is considered a bladder press, which consists of a rotating outer cylinder with an inflatable bladder on the inside.  This bladder can slowly be inflated to higher and higher pressures, allowing the juice to be pressed out of grapes as gently as possible.  Slits on the side of the cylinder allow the juice to drain out and be separated from the pressed skins.

Early in the harvest season the press is mostly used for our white wines.  Whole clusters of grapes still on their stems are added directly into the press in order to separate the juice from the skins as quickly as possible so we don't end up with an overly tannic finished wine.  From there we let the juice ferment in tank or barrel until dry, and then get the wines ready to bottle.  With the reds it's just the opposite!  We want to extract as much flavor and color as possible from the skins and so we leave the juice fermenting on them as long as possible.  As the wine moves through fermentation we monitor the developing flavors and mouth-feel on a daily basis, and when it reaches the qualities we are looking for, only then do we use the press to separate the fermented juice away from the skins.  The fermented juice is then barreled down and aged in our barrel room until they can be bottled.

Second Annual Harvest Dinner Recap!
By Tasting Room Manager Tess Jonson

Harvest dinner was definitely a huge success! A gorgeous evening with a clear sky and the perfect temperature to have our appetizer pairings on the front patio.  We poured our newest release, 2016 Pinot Noir, and it was a fan favorite paired along with the lamb sausage on nann with a cucumber topping.  As we moved into the barrel room for dinner we were greeted by beautifully set tables and another new release, our very first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. We sat and ate a divine supper and drank splendid wines as Afterglow played in the background.  Our bellies were full but that didn't stop us from rallying into the tasting for petite desserts and barrel tasting of our Vellutto (dessert wine).

All in all, a remarkable time had at another wonderful Grand Island Vineyard event.

GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Misty and Chanel Stallings!

Misty and Chanel Stallings have been GIV Wine Club members and friends as soon at it officially started! Thanks to Tasting Room manager Tess Jonson, this friendship started as early as 5th grade, when Tess walked up to Misty on the swings and introduced herself. And this was at the same school where GIV owner Cynthia Salman was the school secretary! Small world, no doubt. They particularly enjoy the wines and beautiful grounds surrounding the Winery and Vineyard.

Living in West Sacramento, they still see a lot of Tess after all these years and have even taken to saying, "She's simply the Tess!" Which if you know Tess, or have been lucky enough to met her, you will surely understand. Staying in the area, Misty graduated from Sac City and Chanel finished her schooling in Tigard, OR. Misty is a Marketing Analyst for FPI Management while Chanel works as an Administrative Assistant for US Bank. Interesting past work for Misty includes being a Kids Club Supervisor at 24 Hour Fitness and for Chanel was selling hermit crabs in a mall kiosk in Tigard OR!

They came to love Grand Island through this relationship with Tess, who just threw Misty a beautiful baby shower in the Grand Island Barrel Room. In case you couldn't tell, Misty is 8.5 months pregnant and the due date of Dec. 2nd is rapidly approaching. She really looks forward to enjoying some wine soon, as her historical favorite GIV wine is the Bridgehead Red, and non-GIV wine is the Scribner Almond Sparkling wine, while for Chanel is the Rendez Rouge. Chanel enjoys Grand Island wine every day after work and God bless her for that, while Misty traditionally enjoys drinking it at the Winery.

Wine Spotlight
Grand Island Vineyards 2016 Pinot Noir
By Winemaker David Shattuck

As harvest is winding down and fall is in the air, we are releasing our newest vintage of Pinot Noir!  The wine pours a beautiful dusty ruby color with abundant berry and cherry notes in the glass.  The palate is rich with remarkably velvety tannins and a firm backbone of acidity.  We love this wine in the fall as it pairs perfectly with all types of fall dishes, especially Thanksgiving!

The 2016 Pinot Noir is a markedly richer and more extracted Pinot Noir than the previous vintage.  The fruit was incredibly concentrated in flavor and tannin.  However, following an extended maceration on skins, we were able to produce the concentrated but supple Pinot that we are proud to  release to you.  Ed and I really enjoyed making this wine and it marks the first red wine released that was harvested, vinted, and bottled - all at Grand Island Vineyards!
