PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

SAVE THE DATE

Please join our superintendent, Dr. Lupini, for a Parent Forum on Monday, November 4th at 6:30 pm in our new auditorium. This will be an opportunity to hear about the myriad educational issues (such as Educator Evaluations, Common Core, PARCC and MCAS, RETELL, and B-Space) facing the district. If you have specific questions, it would be helpful if you would please forward those to the PTO so they could be sent to the superintendent before the meeting.

AUDITORIUM UPDATE
I am happy to report that we received confirmation that barring any unforseen problems, the auditorium will be turned over to us for usage on Monday, November 4th! I am very pleased to have gotten this news.
The two big items awaiting delivery and installation are the flooring and the seating. Both are expected to be delivered and installed by October 29th. There are still some smaller items that will need to be completed but they will not prevent us from being in the space.
I thank our music teachers, drama specialist and 7/8 play coordinators, and all students in grades 5-8, for their patience and flexibility during these weeks without an auditorium or rehearsal space.
Special thanks to Chuck Flaherty, Brookline Public Library director, for his generousity in allowing us to use the library's Hunneman Hall for large group choruses and play rehearsals.
In addition, I thank Pierce Building Task Force parent leaders, Peter Sacks and Philip Kramer, for their continued contributions of time, energy and efforts, over multiple years, to see this project through. Their assistance to me has been invaluable.
We all eagerly anticipate using our beautiful new auditorium. I invite all parents to see the space at a dedication celebration in early December or please plan to join us at the Parent Forum with the superintendent on November 4th at 6:30 pm.
Please look for more details about the dedication of the auditorium in the coming weeks.

Dr. Pipier Smith-Mumford

Principal

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

K-2 students started the year learning about self/general space, and practicing different loco-motor movements from one point to the next (skipping, running, jumping, hopping, galloping, etc.). We are now learning about how we move in different pathways on the ground (straight, curved, zig-zag) and in different levels in space (low, medium, high).

Grades 3-6 students have been engaged in American football and soccer units. Students learned and practiced skills for both sports, then used them in game situations. This will be the last week for soccer and football.

Grades 7 & 8 finished three weeks of learning and playing backyard games. They will have a week where they can choose to play American Football or Soccer, then we will be moving into a new unit, Team Handball. We are also planning on having our grand opening of the fitness center within the next couple of weeks! Visit the Physical Education page on the school website: http://www.pierceschoolbrookline.org/physical-education.html
