PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

MEET THE TEACHER AT THE OPEN HOUSE

Open House is always an important school event where parents/guardians meet their child's teacher(s) and learn about the curriculum and classroom expectations. We hope all children will have a parent or guardian represent them, and we look forward to your participation and support. By the publication of this issue of The Bridge, we hope all kindergarten families had the chance to attend the K Family Breakfast and Open House on Wednesday morning, September 25th, at 7:30 am.

At the 1-6 Open House, please join specialists in the cafeteria for an informal meet and greet before you visit your child's classroom. Additional information and handouts of school events will also be available. Below are the specific classroom visiting times.

Open House for Grades 1-6 is on Wednesday, September 25th at the following times:

5:30 pm for Grades 1 and 2

6:00 pm for Grade 3 and 4

6:30 pm for Grades 5 and 6

At the 7-8 Open House on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30 pm, please report directly to your child's DD advisor. If you do not have this information, lists will be posted in both buildings. In the DD class, you will receive your child's schedule which you will follow for the evening, along with other important information. We then invite you to join us in the cafeteria for a brief overview of two new programs, Town Meeting and 8th grade Community Service.

We look forward to seeing you all!

Dr. Pipier Smith-Mumford

Principal

FUNDRAISER: ARTWISE FOR SCHOOLS

Artwork & parent permissions due Wednesday 10/9

This year, students in K, 2nd, 4th, 7th & 8th grades will participate in a wonderful and exciting fundraiser for Pierce School: Artwise for Schools. Students will create artwork for the project in their classrooms, which will then be sent for processing. The end result will be beautiful 4"x6" cards, with envelopes, that make ideal gifts, invitations and thank you notes.

To include children's artwork in program, we need parents' permission. This year, parental permission should be submitted online. Go to: http://www.artwise.com/campaign-details?slug=john-pierce-school-fall-2013

or visit http://www.artwise.com/ and choose "Parents Sign up" button.

Your participation is important - thank you!

A NOTE ABOUT ROOM PARENTS

Some classrooms still need room parents. We encourage parents to consider taking on this role! It's a great way to help your classroom teacher over the course of the school year, and requires only a modest time commitment. To find out what a room parent does, see:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jikMuVYXfRbRV5tkhSARqQ9HqOZ7CzrbkgTLE0kQKDU/edit?usp=sharing. If you are a room parent, please send your contact information to hillaryjanowski@gmail.com.

We encourage all room parents to organize a beginning-of-year meet-up for families and students in their class (or grade, for the upper grades). This can be a casual, weekend gathering at a local park, but it offers an opportunity for people to get to know each other, especially new families. We have a small budget available if people would like to reserve park picnic areas, so please let us know at pierce.pto@gmail.com.

SPECIALISTS' CORNER >SPECIALIST

ART

As we begin our third week of school, students are settling into routines in the art rooms and getting busy with new work. Many classes are exploring compositions using lines and shapes for more involved work in the next few weeks. Other classes are beginning to explore imagery and symbols that are reflective of the artist.

It is an exciting time of the year as we reflect on previous learning and look forward to building on skills, develop deeper understandings of materials, and express new thoughts and ideas.

Please keep in mind that classes meet once a week, and learning takes time. Keep an eye out for new art on display in the next few weeks as classes complete their work.
