Businesses, PTOs, neighborhood and community groups, town and public safety organizations all sponsor teams of three spellers. Distinguished judges, pronouncers, and prizes contributed by local businesses, as well as a diabolical selection of words, all contribute to the festivities.

Competition is intense to win the coveted Bee Trophy, as well as the prize for the best costume.

We need spellers to join the Pierce team sponsored by the Pierce PTO - or sponsor your own team with some friends. We need you!

STUDENT'S CORNER >

As part of the 5th grade science curriculum, this winter 5K explored
environmental issues affecting our planet. After studying the causes and
effects of different types of pollution, students worked in cooperative
groups to get their message out to the Pierce community. Many groups made
posters that are now hanging in the school cafeteria. One group decided to
focus on the value of solar panels. Since the audience for this (in the
Pierce community) would be parents, they decided to write an article for
the Bridge. It appears below.

                  SOLAR ENERGY

With global warming posing a major threat, many people are looking for
alternative energy sources other than fossil fuels. Since fossil fuels
heat the earth more and more because of the greenhouse effect, solar
energy is a great alternative. Solar energy makes little to no pollution
and noise, and just 5 square meters of panels is enough to replace the
average American's fossil fuel electricity use for a month.

Solar panels can be used to heat water, run your T.V. and many other
things using various methods. If you use solar power as a primary energy
source you can kiss your electric bill goodbye because solar energy is
FREE! And even though it may be expensive to install solar panels it's
less expensive than using fossil fuels because that electric bill can add
up to almost half a million dollars in a lifetime!

This is how it works. When sunlight hits the panels, electrons are knocked
from their atoms. As the electrons flow through the panel, electricity is
generated. So all in all it wouldn't be such a bad idea to put solar
panels on your house.
