Disaster Resumes...

Is Your Resume a Disaster?!?

Maybe not. But if you think your resume could be better than it is, you might like some ideas about how to do that. What you put on your resume is up to you - but this will get you thinking.

All current Smithsonian interns are invited to the Office of Fellowships and Internships resume workshop next Friday 10/19 at 1 pm EDT.

Let Me Introduce You to My Associates...
Catherine Starek
Catherine Starek is serving as an intern with the Smithsonian Associates  this fall, she writes about her experience so far here...

Working as the E-Marketing Intern for The Smithsonian Associates (TSA) has been a challenging and rewarding experience.  It is our job in the E-Marketing department to promote all that TSA has to offer and facilitate sales in support of the mission.  We work to foster greater awareness of individual programs, reinforce the Smithsonian brand, and establish trust and excitement among new and loyal patrons.

To this end, I have had to learn how to effectively navigate and use the web-based program known as WordFly, an integrative "digital communication platform,"  to create and launch TSA email campaigns.  I have also been involved in various viral (social media) and guerrilla (reaching outside the database) marketing efforts.  From email campaigns, to tracking sales, and customer retention efforts, I feel that I am making a difference and learning valuable skills.

Between my experiences in E-Marketing at TSA, in the Roundtable Discussion with Mark Babbitt through Smithsonian OFI, informational interviews, and other internal events, my internship has given me the opportunity to learn, expand my awareness and understanding of best practices in the field, as well as enhance my practical, professional, and personal skills within arts management.  My TSA internship has helped me to further clarify my interests and strengths and provide guidance towards my future career.

The Buck Stops Here
University of Maryland graduate student Nathan Jud is currently a predoctoral Peter Buck Fellow with the National Museum of Natural History's Department of Paleobiology where he studies the early evolution of flowering plants. Nathan talks about his fellowship experience in a short video produced by OFI intern extraordinaire Jessie Miller here!
Native Classrooms
In the summer of 2011 Brandie Macdonald was nominated to by the Charlotte Museum of Natural History to be a Smithsonian Affiliations Partner intern with the National Museum of the American Indian.

Since finishing her internship Brandie has been doing awesome things in part based on connections she made during her internship.

In 2011 she helped organize the 3rd Annual American Heritage Month celebration at the museum in Charlotte and this November she is organizing a Native Classrooms event at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, where she is still in school.

Way to go Brandie!
Soft Skills Matter
OFI Director Eric Woodard (left) and Career Mentor Mark Babbitt (right)
Last Thursday about 45 Smithsonian interns convened for a career advice roundtable session with career mentor extraordinaire Mark Babbitt of Youtern. We had some participants from off campus for a few minutes too before our live stream went kaplunk!

Participants asked some excellent questions and discussed what it takes to be successful as young professional in today's competitive job market.

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Pioneer Aviator
Alfred Verville

Sure, the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) has spaceships...but did you know they've got some other ships too? Fellowships!

NASM Aeronautics Curator Dom Pisano shares some of the history behind the A Verville Fellowship...

The A. Verville Fellowship was named for Alfred V. Verville, an innovative pioneer aviator and aircraft designer and manufacturer. The Verville Fellowship is a competitive grant that is open to academics and non-academics alike, who are interested in analyzing major trends, developments, and accomplishments in the history of aviation.

Among the recipients are Dik A. Daso, currently curator of military aircraft at the NASM, who worked on Hap Arnold and the Evolution of American Air Power (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 2001); Asif A. Siddiqi, who wrote The Red Rockets' Glare: Spaceflight and the Soviet Imagination (New York: Cambridge UP, 2010), and Christine R. Yano, author of Airborne Dreams: "Nisei" Stewardesses and Pan American Airways (Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 2011).

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) recently launched the Stand Up for Science competition for the most effective demonstration of how NIH, NSF, or other federally funded research improves the health, quality of life, or economy of local communities.

You could win a $10,000 Grand Prize or one of several other smaller prizes. Deadline for submissions is Saturday 12/1. Check it out here
