Fall 2015 Newsletter

Since we approved our first project in June 2014, The Build Team has been very busy assisting families in our community.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our donors, grant foundations, and our volunteers who have made it possible to make our mission, Repairing Homes and Restoring Hope, a continuing reality.  Currently, we have three active projects described in this newsletter, which brings to a total of five families we have served.

Take a look at our website,  www.thebuildteam.org , to learn more about:
  • Our work and our projects,
  • How to apply for our repair services,
  • How to volunteer, and
  • How to donate.

We assist Robert and Barbara in Cary
After Robert was diagnosed with liver cancer he was unable to continue working as a glass artisan. Barbara works two, part-time jobs in an effort to support the family. Robert's medical bills resulted in them losing their condominium and being required to move to Robert's workshop/home which was in dire need of repair. They heard of The Build Team and applied. They had immediate needs and were living in a home without hot water, adequate plumbing, or a working bathroom. We approved the application, immediately provided a hot water heater and began additional work in May. A volunteer plumber replaced the plumbing, we demolished the existing bathroom, installed a new shower, toilet, sink and cabinet, tiled the floor, added lighting and painted the new walls and ceilings. They now have a modern, working bathroom with plumbing and hot water. In addition to meeting these immediate needs, we will be doing necessary electrical upgrades along with kitchen and drywall repairs. Robert and Barbara have been extremely appreciative. Robert looks forward to the day when he can be a Build Team volunteer, helping to restore hope for another family.

We Are Working in North Barrington, IL
Working on a Project in North Barrington

A North Barrington family is facing the crushing financial hardships and personal consequences of the wife and mother's battle with aggressive cancer. There are four children in the family, three daughters and a son, ranging from ages six to fifteen years old. Their mother has been diagnosed with cancer twice, once when she was twenty two years old and most recently, at thirty six. The son who is fifteen has no bedroom and sleeps on a pullout couch in the sunroom. It is the mother's wish that her family can use the unfinished basement for the son to have a bedroom of his own along with a bathroom, and a playroom for all the children. The family heard of The Build Team through a local church and applied. We approved the basement project and began design and preliminary work in late July. Framing is completed and electrical and plumbing work is next.  There are currently volunteer opportunities available at all skill levels.

We Approved a Project in Lake in the Hills
We received an application from a woman with a physical disability and extremely limited financial means. She was concerned about a deteriorating retaining wall and the potential for flooding of her home, if the wall gave way. After we reviewed the potential project, we approved the repair and replacement of the wooden retaining wall, as well as the repair or replacement of the handicap access ramp to the home.
