Repairing  Homes.
               Restoring  Hope.

Winter 2016 Newsletter

Since our Fall 2015 Newsletter, we have accomplished a lot in our mission,
Repairing Homes and Restoring Hope:

What we have been working on:
  • Completed our retaining wall project in Lake in the Hills,
  • Brought the North Barrington project very close to completion, and
  • Approved and arranged completion of a new project in Barrington,
New Projects for 2016:
  • Approved another application for our services in Barrington, and
  • Approved essential, additional repair work for a prior project in Cary.
We have accomplished this because of the extraordinary generosity of our volunteers; the funding we have received from our donors and from grants by the Barrington Area Community Foundation and The H.O.P.E. Fund of St. Anne's Catholic Church; and the generosity of local companies. We are deeply appreciative of what we have received, and we take this opportunity to pass-on the heartfelt thanks which we get from the families we have served.

Take a look at our website, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and view our videos on YouTube to learn more about us, including the following:
  • Our work and our projects,
  • How to apply for our repair services,
  • How to volunteer, and
  • How to donate.
We ask for your help now:

At our monthly meeting on December 7, 2015 (we meet every month and have done so since December 2013), we approved an ambitious budget for 2016. We anticipate 5 new projects in 2016 (we already have two) and our budget reflects our estimated project costs of $25,300. This would bring our total project count to 11, since mid-2014.

While our administrative expenses are limited to regulatory filing fees (we have no paid employees and the Board is entirely volunteer), we also have costs for: necessary tools (budgeted for $1,000); insurance, including general liability ($3,200 budget); and modest expenses of publicizing our work to inform and attract potential service recipients, volunteers and, of course, donors ($3,000 budget). All this leads to our request that you consider making a donation now to help us
Repair Homes and Restore Hope.

We pledge to continue to use our donations wisely, efficiently and effectively to do just that. You can donate through our secure, credit card facility on our website, or by check. We are a 501(c)(3) corporation.

We Move to Completion of Projects in North Barrington
In our Fall Newsletter, we described the needs of a family in North Barrington facing the crushing financial hardships and personal consequences of the wife and mother's battle with aggressive cancer. On October 26, 2015, she lost the battle. While we were not able to complete her wish for a bedroom and bath for her teenage son and a playroom for all the four children before she died, we have made great strides to completion. The raw basement space has been framed, insulated, dry-walled, primed, all electrical has been run with entirely new lighting, and the tile-floor has been installed, grouted and sealed. Final painting was completed in January. The family is now using the space and the son has his bedroom. We expect to complete final plumbing and bathroom work in March.  Of particular note is that 26 people contributed volunteer services to this project. In addition, Ford Plumbing of Lake Zurich donated the labor and plumbing supplies, while Ferguson Enterprises supplied the ejector pump.

We Complete Retaining Wall Project in Lake in the Hills, Illinois

Over a weekend in October, a team of volunteers completed the retaining wall project in Lake in the Hills, for a woman with a physical disability and limited financial means.  She applied to us because she was concerned that the wooden retaining wall had deteriorated to a degree that it created a danger of flooding of her home.  We replaced the wooden wall with a carefully designed, interlocking concrete wall.

We Approve and Arrange Completion of Heating Project for Family in Barrington with the Extraordinary Generosity of a Local HVAC Contractor and Supplier
At our November Board meeting, we reviewed an application from a family in Barrington, who were in need of heating repair and replacement services.   After the Board determined that the application met our need criteria, we proceeded to review the proposed work and decided on a scope of work and proposed budget.
At the December Board meeting, the Board reviewed the proposed scope of work and budget and approved the project. We contacted Ahrens & Condill, a local HVAC contractor who recognized the need. With extraordinary generosity, they agreed to arrange for the donation of the necessary new furnace  by Munch's Supply of New Lenox, Illinois, as well as all installation - at no cost to us or the homeowner. This remarkable generosity is another, inspiring example of the special willingness of people and companies to meet the needs of others. The project was completed early January.

We Approve an Essential, Additional Repair Project for Homeowners in Cary, Illinois
In mid-2015, we approved a project for a couple in Cary with immediate and long-term needs. The husband has cancer and the wife works two jobs.
The couple did not have hot water or a working bathroom.  At that time, we took care of the immediate needs by providing hot water and a new bathroom.

At our meeting on February 1, 2016, we approved an essential, additional project to address the long-term needs. The planned project is to update the electrical system, provide a fully-working kitchen, make necessary drywall replacement, and provide laundry facilities.

We Approve Project for Another Family in Barrington
At our December Board meeting, the Board reviewed the application of a single mother with a handicapped child who lives in Barrington.  The family has lived in their home for many years and has been unable financially to do essential repairs.  This, coupled with recent water damage, has made the need a critical one.   After on-site review of the proposed project, we determined that the most pressing need was to provide for a completely renovated  bathroom.  We approved the scope of work and proposed budget at our meeting on February 1.
