Lisa Christian, PhD and her team of researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have determined that the levels of a biomarker called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) change during pregnancy, and can cause both depression in the mother and lower birth weight for the baby.

This research has shown that BDNF levels are able to "provide predictive value for depressive symptoms in women, as well as poor fetal growth" says Christian. "The good news is that there are some good ways to address the issue".

Grant funding through the Patient Safety Advancement Grants (PSAG) is now open to faculty, staff, and students at the Medical Center. Projects should advance quality and patient safety by improving patient outcomes and/or preventing patient harm. Up to four grants of $25,000 in total direct costs for up to one year will be awarded. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, January 24, at 5:00pm.

The OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) is seeking applicants for the TL1 Mentored Clinical Research Training Program. This award supports pre-doctoral trainees pursuing clinical and translational research. Trainees will receive a stipend, research funds, training, tuition support, and access to CCTS resources. This one- year appointment can be renewed once, for a total possible appointment of two years.

An information session regarding eligibility, requirements, benefits and application strategies will be held February 3, 12:00pm - 1:00pm in Prior Hall, room 240 and via WebEx.

New Regulations and Policies Affecting Clinical Trials

Effective January 18, 2017, the DHHS and NIH will be enforcing a new regulation and policy that will affect results reporting and registration for clinical trials.

The Final Rule, DHHs' new regulation, details the requirements for submitting registration and summary results information for specified clinical trials of drug products and device products, as well as for pediatric postmarket surveillances of a device product.

The NIH policy, in accordance with The Final Rule, states that all investigators conducting clinical trials that have been funded in whole or in part by the NIH need to be reported to ClinicalTrials.gov, regardless of whether they are subject to the Final Rule.

These policies apply to most interventional studies of drug, biological and device products that are regulated by the FDA. Possible non-compliance penalties include suspension or termination of grant funding, civil monetary penalties of up to $10,000/day, and consideration of the non-compliance status when making future funding decisions.

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science, in collaboration with the Fisher College of Business Executive Education program, presents the Business of Science Workshop. This three-day workshop was designed to provide clinical and translational researchers with enhanced skills in innovation, project management and team leadership. Sessions are practically oriented, interactive, and will introduce participants to methods they can implement immediately in their research projects.

This workshop will be held February 28, 2017 - March 2, 2017 from 8:00am - 5:00pm in Pfahl Hall .

Congratulations to Myra George, recipient of the Research Match Match Maestro Award for her recruitment and retention work at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital!

The Match Maestro Award is given to research institutions registered with ResearchMatch who have displayed outstanding performance in the field of recruitment and retention. Myra has led Nationwide Children's Hospital to the top- currently, Nationwide Children's has the highest number of pediatric volunteers registered on ResearchMatch in the country. Thanks for your great work, Myra!

Receive Funding Support through the OnPAR Program

The Online Partnership to Accelerate Research (OnPAR) program is a pilot partnership that has been designed to help find private support for unfunded projects.

This is a great alternative to NIH funding. OnPAR's goal is to match biomedical research projects with priority areas of interest of private foundations, pharmaceutical or biotech companies, and/or private biomedical research funders.
