Accelerating Discoveries Toward Better Health
November 2017
As one of the newest members of the Appalachian Translational Research Network (ATRN), Pennsylvania State University’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute hosted the Sixth Annual ATRN Summit October 30 & 31 .  Representatives from most of the ATRN partner institutions and research centers were present to discuss the challenges, successes, and future collaborative opportunities of conducting clinical and translational research projects in Appalachian.

The summit, which took place at the Hershey Lodge, focused on identifying new areas of research or collaboration to help with addressing the significant health challenges and disparities specific to Appalachia. Highlights included presentations by representatives from the Appalachian Regional Commission , the hosts of PBS radio & podcast show  Inside Appalachia ,  the National Cancer Institute and the National Center for Advancing Clinical and Translational Sciences , and a poster session addressing 25 important research initiatives.

Michael Gregory Kurilla, M.D., Ph.D., will direct the NCATS Division of Clinical Innovation beginning Dec. 10, 2017.

Kurilla’s new role will include leading the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program, which supports innovative solutions that advance the efficiency, quality and impact of translational science with the ultimate goal of getting more treatments to more patients more quickly.

As the largest NIH initiative, the  CTSA Program supports a national network of medical research institutions that work together to tackle system-wide scientific and operational problems in clinical and translational research that no one team can overcome.

The OSU BBVCT works with some incredible research participants. This month, we are excited to feature Motley as the Pet Hero of the Month.

This sweet pup, Motley, is our Pet Hero of the month. Motley just finished his clinical trial for dogs diagnosed with solid tumors or lymphoma. Following completion of this clinical trial, owners will receive a credit of $2000 for continued treatment at the Veterinary Medical Center , where they have access to advanced state-of-the-art care diagnostics and therapeutics.

The Blue Buffalo Veterinary Clinical Trials Office at the VMC, currently has 25 clinical trials for pets with different conditions. Click here to see all our clinical trials visit or sign up  here  to receive email updates.
Calls for proposals are now being accepted from teams of clinicians and researchers from any Ohio institute of high learning who are working on innovative health-related devices, diagnostics, medicines, vaccines, software, testing procedures and systems to solve a health/clinical problem and improve the quality of human life.

I-Corps@Ohio , a grant funded program in the state of Ohio ,  formally established a Medtech Track in 2015 in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic and the National Institute of Health Center for Accelerating Innovation (NCAI).

Selected teams are awarded $15K to participate in the summer program, which looks to validate the commercial potential of their research discoveries and how commercial potential can drive future funding, collaboration and funding opportunities. More than 25 Medtech teams have completed the I-Corps@Ohio program and many rate the program as one of the best learning experiences they have engaged in. Program instructors include clinical researchers, biotech and medtech experts from around the country with more than 40 years of experience coaching Medtech teams.

The submission  portal is open and  the deadline to submit is  January 16, 2018 .

Faculty, staff, students and community partners are coming together for The Ohio State University’s inaugural Community Engagement Conference. Designated as a Carnegie community-engaged institution, Ohio State is reaffirming its land-grant covenant with the people of Ohio, the nation and the world through meaningful partnerships that make a measurable impact on resolving the issues of our time.

Registration is now open for the conference, scheduled for Jan. 24 - 25. The conference theme is Partnering to Advance Health and Wellness.

Coming Soon: 2018 Patient Safety Advancement Grant
The Institute for the Design of Environments Aligned for Patient Safety (IDEA4PS) at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and OSU CCTS are gearing up to announce their 2018 request for proposals for the Patient Safety Advancement Grant program.

This is a program designed to help develop grass roots involvement in advancing patient safety in hospital associated studies at the Medical Center by soliciting and funding ideas generated by faculty, staff, and residents. Up to four teams will receive a $25,000 grant to complete studies over a period of one year using innovative approaches to improve patient outcomes or prevent patient harm.

Stay tuned for the 2018 RFA and other details through OneSource and the CCTS website.

The Clinical Research Center’s Nutrition Research Laboratory offers a handful of nutrition services for your research needs. Our nutrition team is made up of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Kristen Heitman, and two diet technicians.

The lab space includes a metabolic kitchen, indirect calorimetry carts, body composition equipment, and research-grade nutrient analysis software. We have the ability to screen, assess & analyze dietary intake, evaluate nutrition status, design menus, implement feeding studies, offer dietary education or counseling, aid in design of research methods, interpret data, and more!

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to develop and nurture a national innovation ecosystem that builds upon biomedical research to develop technologies, products, and services that benefit society. Toward meeting this objective, the I-Corps™ program is being offered. The I-Corps™ at NIH program is focused on educating researchers and technologists on how to translate technologies from the lab into the marketplace. Under this FOA, participating NIH and CDC Institutes and Centers will continue providing administrative supplement awards to currently-funded SBIR and STTR Phase I grantees. Due December 18, 2017.

The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) has several open   Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program   funding opportunities. SBIR and STTR funding supports small business entrepreneurs working on the advancement and commercialization of translational research technologies.

NCATS encourages applications in drug discovery and development; biomedical, clinical and health research informatics; clinical, dissemination and implementation research; and clinical trials. Start the application process now to ensure a smooth submission.

The next deadline to apply for opportunities is Jan. 5, 2018, 5:00 p.m. local time.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement invites applications for support of clinical studies to repurpose existing drugs or biologics (therapeutics) that have already completed at least a Phase l trial for a different indication by the time an award is made. The hypothesis for proposed studies must be developed using innovative processes to identify the therapeutic/indication pair.

The U01 award may be used for Phase I and/or Phase II clinical trials for a new therapeutic use to establish substantial evidence of efficacy and to establish evidence of safety for the new use.   Due January 5, 2018.

The FFH Seed Grant Competition is a university-wide initiative with a primary goal of advancing the use of metabolomics-based technology in food and nutrition research for the improvement of health. Successful proposals will focus on food and nutritional metabolomics, are innovative, collaborative, create value, result in presentations at professional meetings and peer-reviewed publications, and catalyze the submission of competitive extramural grants.

The proposal deadline is January 8, 2018.
