PE Collides with History in Rockville!

Last Thursday, the 7th graders, joined by middle school History teacher Mrs. Scola, stopped at markers in Rockville on their PE walk. As they learn about the Civil War in History class, it is interesting to learn of events that happened right here around our campus.

For instance, when J.E.B. Stuart rode into Rockville on June 28, 1863, he arrested Union supporters in the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church!  Stuart marched these men along with the 150 U.S. wagons and 900 mules he had captured to join Robert E. Lee. However, the going was slow with all those wagons, and Lee's army wound up meeting Union troops in Gettysburg, PA on July 1, 1863. Lee relied on Stuart for reconnaissance, but Stuart wasn't there because he stopped in Rockville!

A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Families,

Today, I received the list from Mrs. Gandal, CES Learning Resource Teacher, of those students who have qualifying standardized test scores for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth's Academic Talent Search. I am so proud! Sixty-five percent of our middle school students (5th through 8th grades) are eligible to participate. This is up from 54% of our middle school students in 2016 and 46% in 2015. Qualifying for this program is not easy. A student must score at the 95% or above in at least one of the following sections of the ERB's: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary or Mathematics. This percentage compares to 29% of our middle school students in 2010! This is quite a testimony to the outstanding faculty, rigorous curriculum and wonderful parents at CES who support our students every day. We all deserve a pat on the back and a round of applause!

It is so rewarding to get the validation from objective data about the calibre of the program here. However, I also love the validation that I receive around this time of year that we have, not only our minds in the right place, but our hearts, too. The season of Christmas, and I mean "true" Christmas, is filling these halls. Yes, the little ones are excited about elves and Santa, but there is also wonderful conversation going on about people in our lives, past and present, who have touched and shaped us. We are talking about cultivating a generous spirit and the meaning of Advent... a hopeful expectation that God's presence will be, and is, present in the world through us.

A prayer attributed to St. Teresa of Avila:
Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion is to look out to the world; yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; yours are the hands with which God is to bless people now.

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

Middle School Parents - Save the Date!

On Tuesday, January 2nd (the day we get back from Christmas Break) the entire Middle School will be going ice skating!

The students will walk to Rockville Town Center after lunch and return before dismissal to warm up with some hot cocoa. Skate rentals are available. More details to come in next week's Cardinal.

8th Grade to the Shakespeare Theatre

The eighth grade took the Metro to the Shakespeare Theatre last week to attend a student matinee of Shakepeare's Twelfth Night.

This production was done in modern dress, and, rather than a ship wreck as Shakespeare wrote it, the play began with a plane crash. It was very dramatic when suitcases fell to the stage from the rafters, especially because our students were seated right on the stage!

Now that they've seen the play, they are ready to read it for themselves.

8th Annual Space Foundation
Art Contest
"My Space City Vision"

In November, Mrs. Luisa Vargas submitted artwork by all students in
Preschool 3's through 8th grade to the annual Space Foundation art contest.
This year, the theme is "My Space City Vision."

Results will be announced on January 8, 2018, but in the meantime, you can check out a photo of your child's submission online HERE!

Financial Aid
Application portal now open

The SSS by NAIS financial aid portal for families is open for 2018-2019 financial aid applications.  Both returning and prospective parents may go into the system now to apply for funds for the 2018-2019 school year.

CES partners with School and Student Services at the National Association for Independent Schools to process applications for financial assistance.

The due date for financial aid applications is Friday, January 26, 2018 for notification of award on March 1, 2018.

You may complete your family's financial aid application without a completed 2017 tax return.  You can use 2016 numbers and a good faith estimate of your 2017 numbers.

Tax returns, when completed, are required for verification.

Note:  Your financial aid application for 2018-2019 will not be processed if you haven't submitted your 2016 tax return that is required for current year funding.  Pass any tax returns not yet provided to Janet Gerber in hard copy or via scan/email (

Twilight in Venice
Please SAVE THE DATE and join us February 9, 2018 for the Christ Episcopal School "Twilight in Venice" Auction and Gala! This event brings together families and faculty from throughout the school for a fun night of eating, drinking, dancing, and raising money to support our students. This year, the celebrating returns to the beautiful Borgia Ballroom at Maggiano's in Chevy Chase, where we will enjoy delicious Italian cuisine!

Last year from the auction, CES raised over $90,000, and more than $30,000 to remodel a lower school classroom. Your generosity will make a huge difference in the financial success of the Gala, which directly benefits the excellent educational programs at Christ Episcopal School.

Please look for your invitation in the mail toward the end of December! We hope you will join us and bring a friend!
