A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Family,

It is wonderful to be home and back at CES. After an amazing two weeks in China, I immediately got back on a plane to visit my daughter who is expecting my first grandbaby on Dec. 22. By the time I had returned from that weekend trip, I had a raging cold that ultimately turned into pneumonia.  So, instead of getting on a plane again, and flying to Omaha to visit my husband's family for Thanksgiving, I kissed him good-bye and spent the next five days lying on the sofa.  Now, typically this would have sent me into an immediate funk...a woe-is-me, full-fledged pity party.  Yes, I would have become Pitiful Pearl.  But, thankfully, I was just fine.  In fact, I enjoyed the quiet, the time to indulge in bad television as well as the time to reflect on the remarkable three weeks I had just experienced.

The trip to China was amazing.  I met exceptional people who are passionate about children, education, creativity, art, music and literature.  Moses Wang, co-owner of YMMArt, was intent on introducing me to the rich history, culture and beauty of China. I learned a lot about the tenacity and work ethic of the Chinese people and their commitment, for centuries, to creating beauty and nurturing the human spirit... even when their government leaders did not support such nurturing.  I was struck by the gentleness and generosity of every person I met.  We were greeted with warmth, acceptance, and gifts of food, drink and cultural souvenirs.  When my cough started to emerge, I was suddenly awash in cough drops, tiger balm (similar to vapor rub) and hot tea.  I never asked for a thing, but each of my needs was graciously anticipated and tended to.  I was touched beyond measure.  In fact, I found myself wondering if I could have been that observant and quick to offer comfort.  It was remarkable.

So, as I read and hear more about U.S.-China relations and agonize over what the future holds for America, it is such a gift to have these memories... to be reminded that below the chaos and loud clamoring of politics, there are gentle, good people who abound and are making a difference across this world... from CES to Asia and back again.  For that, I am truly thankful.

Oh, and the baby that is on the way?????  I'm SUPER thankful for that!

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

A Holiday Concert  of Carols from Around the World
will be presented by

The National Philharmonic Singers

Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 8 p.m.
Christ Episcopal Church
107 South Washington Street, Rockville, Maryland 20850

Stan Engebretson and Victoria Gau, Conductors

Carols from Around the World  highlight this annual event, a benefit performance for the Community Ministries of Rockville, raising monies for this worthy cause at one of their most crucial times of the year.

The concert begins with a the mystical  Gitanjali Chant, followed by  Gaudete, a Swedish collection of holiday arrangements of favorites such as  In Dulci Jubilo; Lo, How a Rose;  and  Psallite.

To balance this traditional music, the Philharmonic Singers will present new Christmas arrangements of  The Wexford Carol; Sleep Little Baby, Sleep; and the beautiful, tender
O Magnum Mysterium by Nicholas White.

The lighter side of Christmas music is explored with  Jingle Bells; Carols for All to Sing; and the audience-favorite of  Twelve Days of Christmas before closing with a moving candlelight rendition of  Silent Night.

Members of The National Philharmonic Singers perform as a chamber choir.  The group is among several performing ensembles of the National Philharmonic, in residence at the Music Center at Strathmore.  As such, they present works suited for smaller ensembles, whether with accompaniment or a cappella.  The repertoire ranges from 16th to 21st  centuries, and they often premiere new compositions by local composers.  This is the twelfth year of performance at Christ Church.

Free-will donations will benefit the  Community Ministries of Rockville.

Two  6th grade students,  Isabella G. ('20) &  Annelise S. ('20) performed in  The Nutcracker  at the Kennedy Center last week!

Playing soldiers in the show, these two demonstrated to us that being part of a team makes your own light shine brighter.

Here they are pictured in front of the poster for the show.

Way to go, dancing Cardinals!
