A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Family,

Summer, here we come!!!  As I know you are well aware, this is the last week of school.  Tomorrow is the last day for our preschool children, and Friday is the last day for kindergarten through 8th grade students. Friday morning is the baccalaureate and graduation service for the 8th grade students.  It is a full Eucharist and a spectacularly beautiful way to end the year. All of you are invited, and we would love to have you as part of the service. It begins at 10:00am in the church.

Today was the special awards' ceremony for the 8th grade students.  During this ceremony, each student is introduced by me and then presents his or her essay, "What CES Means To Me."  Often very moving, these essays reflect each child and how CES has shaped him/her. Without exception, each student talked about how the teachers had challenged them, but they also mentioned how they believe that CES helped them to be kinder, better people.

I send special gratitude today to all of the faculty members, staff and administrators who work tirelessly to ensure that each student's day is meaningful and full of opportunities for feeling competent and strong.  I also want to express my appreciation to all of the parents and extended family members of our students for your commitment to CES, for helping us to be the best school we can be and to stay true to our mission, "to nurture students to become kind, confident, well-rounded individuals prepared to contribute to their community and thrive personally, spiritually and academically."  Today, as I watched and listened to our graduates, I thought "Well done, CES." These students are a beautiful reflection of the CES mission, and each of them will carry their gifts into their high schools where I hope they will shine.

Happy summer CES Cardinals!

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed. D.

We're enjoying the summer feeling around here!

Chromebooks

With the end of our current school year in sight it is time to look ahead to new adventures, and that includes new Chromebook models! This is a great opportunity to consider your technology options for the school year ahead-- from new middle school students in fifth grade, to graduating eighth graders, and every grade in between.

2018-2019 String Orchestra Program

classical_illustration.jpg Starting in the 2nd grade, our students have the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Second graders may start on the violin and switch to any of the bigger instruments (viola, cello or bass) once they get into 4th grade.

Much like a team sport, our string orchestra students learn to play in an ensemble and have many performance opportunities throughout the year, including a music competition for our middle school students at King's Dominion in the Spring.

An email has been sent out with more details about instruments, rentals and other supplies, so please check your inbox! Questions? E mail Mrs. Barnes at  [email protected].

Lower School Musical DVDs
All LS Musical DVDs have been sent home. If you have not paid for yours yet, please send in your money ASAP.

We have a few extra DVDs this year! If you did not order one but still want one, please send in cash or a check for $15.

Firm Foundation, Bright Future Update
The New Building Includes a Practice Gymnasium!

Christ Episcopal Church and School are excited to share the most updated drawings and renderings for the new building with a plan for beginning construction in 2019!  The building will house the administrative offices, including the Head of School, Director of Admission, Director of Finance, Director of Development, Director of Extended Day and Summer Camp.  It will also be the location for the Lower School classrooms and the Lower School Division Head, the library and the art room.

Some of the most exciting news, however, is that we have been able to figure out a way to include a practice gymnasium!!! It will also serve as a venue for some of our smaller performances and displays, such as the orchestra concert or the Fourth Grade State Fair.  The Athletic Director will have an office next to the gym and storage should allow for equipment to be easily transported from the building out to the green top.

Please take a look at the plans that are included.  We have raised approximately $2.5 million towards our $4.5 million project that includes this beautiful building and the renovation of the church building which will include the updated Murdock Room (remodelling slated for this summer), all new classrooms for the middle school, an elevator and refreshed worship space.

If you love CES, want to see it grow and thrive for another fifty years, and have not yet made a pledge to the capital campaign that will provide the funds for these projects, please make a pledge now.  We need your help to reach our goals, create a more beautiful and easily navigable worship space and transform Christ Episcopal School into a 21st century learning space that reflects the beauty of our program.

New themes and new Specialty Camps!   You can check it all out  RIGHT HERE!

We are also looking for great staff talent so if you know anyone looking for a part-time summer job, please spread the word!

NEW THIS YEAR!  Looking for rising ninth graders who would like to volunteer for a week or more with our Little Cardinals (preschool camp)! Email Marion Entwisle at [email protected] with any questions.

S t u d e n t   S p o t l i g h t

Over Memorial Day weekend, sixth grader Wells T. and his Koa Sports 12U baseball teammates competed in Fruitland, MD against travel teams from Wicomico, Worcester, Calvert, and Anne Arundel Counties. After breezing through their first five games, the Koa Green Wave found itself in a dogfight for the title--and won!

Their work ethic, consistently positive and supportive attitudes, and their mental toughness saw them through the three-day event. For the weekend, Koa outscored its opponents 81-20. It's the team's second tournament title in as many years (previously winning the Northern Virginia Travel Baseball postseason 11U title).

Wells pitches and plays outfield for Koa, and will compete on their squad in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame tournament this summer. Way to go, Wells! Keep up that Cardinal Teamwork!
