Berks Gas Truth
December 2012
Welcome to Berks Gas Truth

Greetings!

Season's Greetings! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and are looking forward to fun and relaxing holidays with friends and family.

Our November Berks Gas Truth meeting was great! We're all excited about our Campaign to Defeat Corbett (which may well have to be expanded to include a campaign to defeat Hanger and Rendell in the primary). We agreed to move our monthly meetings to the first Thursday of the month and decided to start our new meeting schedule in December, so we'll be meeting on the 6th at 7 p.m. at 361 East Main Street in Kutztown. Read more about our meeting in the meeting announcement below.

2012 was an incredibly busy year for Berks Gas Truth. You can read all about it in our 2012 Year in Review!

Our friends in Chester County need our help! The residents of Warwick Township are organizing opposition to the Commonwealth Pipeline headed their way. Find out how you can help below!

A couple of great events are coming up that you won't want to miss. Be sure to check out the items below on the Beehive Collective and Green Gifts from the Heart!

Shopping for the fractivist who has everything? Our Don't Frack Your Mother shirt makes the perfect holiday gift! The link to our order form is below. Be sure to order early and often! If your favorite fractivist rides a bike, check out the BGT Boovaboxes from our friend Paul David and his team!

Finally, our thoughts remain with the many families whose lives have been turned upside down by Hurricane Sandy. Please consider donating to one of the charities below or any of the many other organizations helping people put their lives back together.

Thanks to all of you for a great 2012! Wishing you the happiest of holidays and a safe, healthy, and frack-free 2013!

CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT CORBETT CONTINUES!

HIT THE ROAD, FRACK!

DECEMBER BERKS GAS TRUTH MEETING
Thursday, December 6th, 7 p.m.
361 East Main Street, Kutztown

We hit the ground running at our November meeting! Thanks to Sam Bernhardt, our favorite Food & Water Watch organizer, for attending! He'll be back in the Lehigh Valley for their kick-off on December 13th in Bethlehem, so you still have a chance to check out what he has to say if you missed our meeting.

Among the things we discussed was the importance of working with other constituencies who are interested in seeing Corbett ousted in 2014. We also discussed the need to expand our own membership, so please join us on the 6th and bring someone with you who has never attended one of our meetings before.

We agreed we need to work on messaging, so that will be a big part of what we do at this working meeting. We'll also discuss other goals for 2013, including the Farm Show, the pledge campaign, and our presence at screenings of The Promised Land!

We got a pizza last time. That was a very good thing. We will do it again, so save room for a slice and bring your favorite beverage!

INTRODUCING
BERKS GAS TRUTH'S 1st ANNUAL
YEAR in REVIEW

The Beehive Collective presents their innovative graphic "The True Cost of Coal" in

picture-lecture at Kutztown University

The Kutztown University Environmental Action Club and the Association of Campus Events are co-sponsoring a picture-lecture presentation from the Beehive Design Collective entitled "The True Cost of Coal".  This unique event will be held Tuesday, December 4th in the McFarland Student Union Building Room 183 from 6-8pm, and is free and open to the public.

Two years in the making, "The True Cost of Coal" is an elaborate narrative illustration that explores the complex story of mountaintop removal coal mining and the broader impacts of coal in Appalachia and beyond. The image is the culmination of an intensive and collaborative research process, as the Beehive methodology centers on first hand story-sharing. To create the poster, the Beehive interviewed hundreds of community members throughout the Appalachia region.

The Bees craft visual metaphors and weave them together in a patchwork "quilt" of personal stories. In their interactive picture-lectures, they lead audiences through an engaging, larger-than-life banner version of the graphic, interweaving anecdotes, statistics, and history. The experience prompts discussion and understanding of contemporary struggles about energy and coal, while honoring the deep legacy of the Appalachian experience.

"The True Cost of Coal" is only the latest work in the Beehive's repertoire of graphics campaigns. The Beehive tackles issues as diverse as biotechnology, corporate globalization, food and agriculture, and colonialism. The group's mission is to "cross-pollinate the grassroots" by creating images that educate the public and deconstruct complex geopolitical issues.  Their body of work is distributed as "anti-copyright;" individuals and organizations are encouraged to reproduce the graphics for non-profit use as a means of circulating information and awareness.

This event is being organized by the KU Environmental Action Club in an effort to raise awareness about the impacts of our energy consumption nationwide.  Questions regarding the event can be directed to organizer Michelle Sayles at msayles@dejazzd.com or 717-271-2218.  For more information on the Beehive Collective and to view their graphics visit www.beehivecollective.org or beehivecollective.blogspot.com.
