Happy Friday!
Although it was nice to have a two week break, I was so excited to see all of our students Tuesday morning. It seemed like many of them were a little sleepy as they had been off their normal routine. The teachers didn't let this slow them down. Students and teachers jumped right back into their routine and hit the ground running.
Many of our students read over winter break and will be participating in the Inside Out parties coming up. Students are sure to have a ton of fun as they turn a snack "inside out" and play different games. Thank you for encouraging your child to read over the break. This helps maintain their reading skills and also makes the transition a little smoother when school resumes.
Report cards are now available on PowerSchool. Be sure you login to the site and check your child's progress. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher directly. She will be more than willing to help you understand your child's grades.
This stretch of the school year seems to be the most difficult for students as they don't get to play outside quite as often. Please keep your home routine consistent and continue to encourage your child to do his/her best every day.
Brownsburg teachers and staff work every day to make sure your student is having a positive experience in school, and we know you are mindful of your student's current and future educational journey.
Join us as Brownsburg Community School Corporation Assistant Superintendent Kat Jessup and Brownsburg High School Principal Bret Daghe share information about the many opportunities your student will be able to experience as they move forward from elementary to middle school to high school. Mrs. Jessup and Mr. Daghe will cover a variety of topics including: the different diploma types offered, Advanced Placement classes, Dual College Credit, Area 31 technical offerings, secondary math progression, fine arts, club opportunities, job training for life skills students, and more. We hope you can make it for this discussion to help prepare your family for what's next. You are welcome to attend any of the following sessions as they will be identical. ALL MEETINGS ARE AT 6:30PM. We hope you can attend one of these meetings to get answers to all of your questions.
Tuesday, January 12 at Cardinal Elementary School Wednesday, January 13 at Brown Elementary School Thursday, January 14 at Reagan Elementary School Wednesday, January 20 at Delaware Trail Elementary Thursday, January 21 at White Lick Elementary School
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SESSION JANUARY 26, 2016, 6:30PM---Brownsburg is a great community with great schools. It's also a community and school corporation that is experiencing rapid growth. Please join us for the first of many conversations that help to find solutions for this growth. Join us for a Community Engagement Session on January 26th at 6:30pm at Brownsburg High School.
Finally, I want to celebrate those students who clipped up to red. I am so proud of all of our students but especially proud of these students for the behavior choices they've been making. These students include:

Counselor's Character Corner
|
|
The character trait for the month of January is Integrity. Integrity means doing what you are supposed to do even when no one is looking. Being trustworthy is an aspect of integrity. If you want others to trust you, you need to show this with your words and actions. To reinforce January's trait of Integrity, you could discuss this quote by Oprah Winfrey: "Just tell the truth. It will save you every time". Ask your children, "Have they ever told on themselves when they made a bad choice?" You could discuss that telling the truth isn't easy, but trying to regain trust after telling a lie is even harder. If you tell the truth, you only get in trouble for your bad choice. If you lie, you get in trouble for your bad choice and for lying. Which would you rather do?
Resource Bags:
Have you recently had a death in the family? Do you want to learn more about ADD/ADHD? Resource bags are now available to Cardinal families who want to learn more about the topics listed above. The bags consist of parenting books, activity books, story books, and games along with tips sheets for parents. If you would like to check out one of the bags for one week, please contact Krissi Miller, School Counselor, at 852-1036 ext. 1218.

Notes from the Nurse

|
School district policy requires a Hold Harmless form with a parent's signature and doctor's order to give any prescription medication or adult strength over- the- counter medications to children under the age of 12. I cannot administer prescription medication without this completed!
- Prescription medication must be brought to school in a properly labeled pharmacy container. Also, any controlled substances (i.e. most ADHD medications) need to be brought in to the clinic by a parent or guardian.
- Please fill out an OTC permission form to allow me to give any children's strength over-the-counter medications, including cough drops, to your child while at school.
- Students may not keep medication in their desk, pocket, backpack, or lunch box.
- Please keep your emergency contact numbers current with the front office. You never know when I may need to contact you!
- Remind your child not to share hats, combs, brushes, headbands, etc. with other children while at school.
- Flu shots are still highly recommended!
- Clinic forms can be found on the school website or in the clinic.
- Please keep me updated with any changes in your student's health status as the school year progresses.
Don't forget to send your students with proper winter gear for recess including warm coats, hats, and gloves!
Please call me with any questions or concerns!

HIGH ABILITY IDENTIFICATION for 2016-2017
|
|
Identification for High Ability programming for the next school year will begin later this month and be concluded by Spring Break. In 1st grade, students who met specific criteria on the CogAT administered in November, will proceed further in the identification process and parent permission will be required for further assessment which will occur in February. Results of the CogAT are available from the school counselor, if requested. Identification of 5th grade students for middle school placements will begin in February and parent permission will be required for Language Arts assessments. All 5th grade students will participate in math placement assessments. A parent whose child has not been recommended for the assessment process but has evidence of strong, high ability qualities/performance, should contact the school principal to discuss the appropriateness of assessment. Additional questions about the High Ability program can be directed to Julie Van Liew, Coordinator of Curriculum and Special Programs at 852-5726.

Library Volunteers Needed
|
|
Happy New Year from the Cardinal Library!
We are starting the New Year with a great selection of new books, thanks to the generosity of the Cardinal PSG! I was given the opportunity to choose many books for our library from the book fair this fall! It's as fun for me to choose them and get them ready for our library, as it is for our students to get their hands on them! I cannot thank the PSG and the book fair chair, Linda Cross, enough for all of these wonderful new books!
**We could still use library volunteers on Tuesdays to help reshelve and repair books! If you can spare an hour or two twice a month, or even once a month, we really could use your help! Please e-mail me if you would like to volunteer or if you need more information!
Thank you! Mrs. Jill Holstein Media Specialist
