Dear Cardinal Families:

Happy Friday Cardinal Families.Today marks the end of the first quarter.  I am so proud of the work our students and teachers have done so far this year.  There hasn't been a day that's gone by where teachers haven't challenged our students to think harder and learn more, and the best part...our students have met these challenges.  Report cards will be posted in PowerSchool on October 9th.  Please be sure to log in and view your child's first quarter grades.

Next week you will be attending parent/teacher conferences.  Please take this time to learn how your child has been progressing academically throughout the year and how he/she is doing socially and emotionally.  All three areas are very important to the development of our students.  Teachers will be sharing ideas on how you can support your child better at home, but it's also important for you to share ideas with the teachers about how we can do a better job here based upon your knowledge of your child.  This is a great time for us to connect and partner with you to give your child the best educational experience possible.

Our fall break begins on October 12.  Students will have a two week break.  However, we don't want them to take a break from everything at school.  We are asking students to "Fall into Reading" over break with our fall reading challenge.  We want students to read for 15 minutes 10 days over the break.  Please spend time reading with your child and asking them questions.  This is one of the most important things you can do to help your child be successful at school.  There will be a celebration for all students who complete the reading challenge.  As an extra incentive, any student who completes all three reading challenges throughout the year will enjoy a pool party at the high school pool.  Please encourage your child to read!

I would like to give a quick shout out to the 5th grade students and Mrs. McMullen's class as well as to Miss Havala.  Their music program on Tuesday was awesome.  It was evident that they had worked very hard to prepare for this.  Congratulations to them!

I can't end my note to you without recognizing our students who have clipped up to red recently.  I am so proud of the behavior choices these students have made in order to reach the top.  Congratulations to these students:

Elaina Young
Noah Albright

Fall arrived quickly with the temperatures being so cool.  I hope you don't get blown away this weekend.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
The character trait for the month of September and October is Responsibility.  Responsibility means being accountable for what we say and do.  Last week we celebrated College Go Week.   This is a week for students to be thinking of their plans for college and career success.   Our elementary students are on the road to college and there are many things they can do now to ensure a successful future.  They can show the character trait of responsibility by doing their best every day by following the ideas below:

1. Do your homework
Doing your homework will help you keep up your grades and develop your skills for test time. Working on problems or reading a little each day will keep the ideas fresh in your head. You'll do better on standardized tests like the ISTEP+ if you do your homework, too.

2. Pay attention
If you are tempted to talk to friends or daydream when your teacher is talking, come up with strategies to stay focused on your learning. Ask to sit at the front of the class or talk to your parents or teacher if you need help.

3. Study
Don't plan on just remembering everything before a test.  Schedule time the night before a test to review the material. You may find that you learn best if you make flashcards or say things out loud.

4. Eat right
Making healthy food choices can help you learn better. No one can concentrate on an empty stomach! Always eat breakfast.

5. Get enough sleep
Your body-including your mind-won't function right if you don't give yourself enough sleep. Getting enough sleep will help you to pay attention better, and it will be easier to remember what you're learning in school.

A Note from the School Nurse
On Tuesday, October 27th, the Lions Club of Indiana will be conducting vision screenings after lunch for all 1st graders, 3rd graders, 5th graders, and any student new to the corporation.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, all 1st graders will have the rest of their state-mandated screening completed with an eye doctor.

If your child currently wears prescription glasses or contacts, please make sure they are with your child on both of these important days.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
