Community Engagement Panel to Meet Tonight on Nuclear Plant Decommissioning
The public is invited to attend tonight's regular meeting of the Community Engagement Panel (CEP) formed to advise the co-owners of the San Onofre nuclear plant on decommissioning the facility. The meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. at The Hills Hotel, 25205 La Paz Road, Laguna Hills.

Southern California Edison (SCE) and the co-owners of the nuclear plant established the CEP to serve as a conduit of information between the owners and the public throughout decommissioning. One of the early regulatory steps in that process is submitting to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission a detailed plan to manage the nuclear plant's used nuclear fuel. The CEP will discuss this plan, called an Irradiated Fuel Management Plan.

Member Spotlight:
Dana Wharf
Sportfishing & Whale Watching
Located in the OC Dana Point Harbor, Dana Wharf has offered sport fishing and whale watching excursions to residents and visitors of the area for over 40 years. Founder Don Hansen began working for San Clemente Sportfishing in the 1960s. He later bought the business and moved it to the Dana Point Harbor (and changed the name to reflect its new home) when the Harbor opened in 1971. As the first business in the Dana Harbor, Dana Wharf Sportfishing set the precedent for the future of tourism there.

Dana Wharf celebrated their 43rd anniversary last week, and are currently in their 30th year of membership with the Dana Point Chamber.

Can you please tell us a brief history of your business?
In 1961, Don Hansen ran a sportfishing boat and provided whale watching adventures off the San Clemente Pier. In 1971 San Clemente Sportfishing was re-christened Dana Wharf Whale Watching & Sportfishing, becoming the first operating business in the Harbor.

With a fleet of vessels, including the flagship 95 ft. Dana Pride and the 65 ft. luxurious Ocean Adventures Catamaran, we escort individuals, groups and private charters on whale watching, harbor cruises and sportfishing adventures every day. Every captain is an expert navigator and a Certified Naturalist by the American Cetacean Society. Each adventure is narrated by captains who are eager to share their passion for marine mammals.

Why did you join the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce?
We are proud to be celebrating our 30-year birthday with the Chamber this year! It is not only good business to be an active member of the chamber, it is our responsibility to support the business community. The Chamber is integral in promoting the city and its businesses to locals and visitors around the world.

In what areas of the Chamber are you involved?
Dana Wharf is committed to supporting the Chamber, specifically Tourism. Educating tourism professionals about Dana Point is imperative, as many businesses rely on tourism revenue. We also work to promote special events and our Charter Director is a Chamber Ambassador. Both Don Hansen and co-owner Donna Kalez have previously held positions in the Chamber.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your business that most people wouldn't know?
The Honorable Don Hansen is the United States Tuna Commissioner - appointed by both Presidents Bush and Obama.

Do you have any piece of advice for new businesses owners?
Support the community and they'll support you. Don't just join, be involved!

Friends of the Dana Point Library

The Friends of the Dana Point Library was organized in 1976, one year after the opening of the Dana Point Library, the "Library by the Sea". Our logo emphasizes the sea, the Headlands, and Richard Dana after whom the town is named. Our newsletter is aptly called "The Sea Scribe".

Our goals are:
  • To create public awareness and support for the library facilities and programs.
  • To further understanding and communication between the library and the community.
  • To establish a means to receive economic gifts, services, and endowments for the sole benefit of the Dana Point library.

Funds raised by the Friends are principally spent on library needs in consultation with the library staff. The 2014 budget calls for over $110,000 to be spent on library refurbishments, programs and collections. We sell community donated books at the library book store.and at participating stores and receive monetary donations from groups and individuals. We have an all-inclusive rule of membership, are self-governing and self-staffing. We welcome new members.
