June 2015 - In This Issue: 25
A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Chillicothe and Ross County IS a great place to live, work, and play. In spite of the national and international press that is putting a doom and gloom light on our community, there are wonderful things taking place. I think now is the time we all work hard to share those good stories, while not forgetting about or ignoring the certain issues and problems that are being addressed by the proper authorities.

Yes, we have real problem with drugs and other social issues...but that should not define who or what we are. We all need to be part of the solution and not adding to the problems.

Just in the past few days as the negative attention has started to swell, some business owners and individuals have made it their mission to not "share" the negative news stories or posts on social media but, instead, write about the positive things happening in their lives and businesses. Again, we can't ignore what is happening, but we can continue to share with the world that we live and work here for a reason and we will not allow bad things to continue to happen while there is so much good taking place.

And good things are taking place. Construction continues to be abundant along Bridge Street, the downtown is still coming alive again, and people and agencies are working together like never before to address our current issues and cast a vision for our future.

One such organization that has grown into our community's largest employer is Adena Health System. Marking 120 years of service to our area, Adena CEO Mark Shuter shares some thoughts in an article later in this newsletter. We want to thank them for their commitment to the health of our community and wish them the very best in their next 120 years.

ADENA HEALTH SYSTEM: 120 YEARS  OF MEETING COMMUNITY NEED

A Message from Adena President & CEO Mark Shuter

CHILLICOTHE -- June 27 marks the 120th anniversary of Adena's founding. While our founders were looking for a place to take-in and care for emergent cases, today, we at Adena work to meet as many of the health needs those living in our communities may have. Nearby access to state-of-the-art, quality healthcare is something that most of us now take for granted.

Over the past 120 years, Adena has grown from a four-employee hospital within a house on Bridge Street, to a nearly 2,800-employee, three-hospital health system, that serves more than a half-million people living in 12 counties. As the needs of our communities and our region have changed and grown, Adena has also had to change and grow to meet those needs.

As we move onto the next 120 years, Adena's mission will continue to evolve. We will continue to offer our patients close-to-home access to the most up-to-date, high quality care by some of the nation's best caregivers. We will also continue to adapt to industry changes, while working to always meet the expectations and needs of our patients.

In today's healthcare environment, focus on care goes beyond the four walls of a hospital or physician's office. We are beginning to work harder to also meet the global health needs of our communities as a whole; as opposed to only seeing patients when they are sick or in distress. Doing this will involve changing attitudes and helping people within our communities adapt their lifestyles to achieve better overall health.

Providing care for 120 years, Adena is part of the fabric of Ross County and our region. Making and keeping people healthy is why we are here, and it is what we love to do. Thank you for supporting our mission and for being a part of Adena's rich history. I hope that you are as proud to have Adena in this community as I am.

VA MEDICAL CENTER BEGINS "SUMMER OF SERVICE"

(Chillicothe, Ohio) - A new nationwide initiative - a "Summer of Service" - seeks the help of citizens in and around Chillicothe to create and build partnerships to grow the number of individuals and organizations serving Veterans here.

The Chillicothe VA Medical Center is renewing its commitment to Veterans by inviting the community to visit and explore opportunities to serve Veterans during a Volunteering for Veterans open house to spur increased local engagement and welcome members of the community interested in supporting the needs of Veterans.  This event will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015, outside of Building 30 from

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Ross County Veterans Council will be providing hot dogs, chips and soda.

"We have made progress over the past year addressing the challenges we face in delivering care and benefits to millions of Veterans and their families," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald.  "While there is more work to do to honor our commitment to Veterans, we also recognize that VA cannot do it alone.  We are asking Americans everywhere to join the Summer of Service and help us give back to those who have given so much to our nation."

In the coming weeks, the Chillicothe VA Medical Center will be working closely with Congressional partners, Veterans service organizations, mayors and local communities, private sector and non-profit organizations, and VA employees to identify new and innovative ways to support VA's commitment to care for those who "have borne the battle" and their families.

VA has also established the following goals to achieve by Labor Day:

  • Increasing the number of volunteers:  Committed to engaging with 100,000 volunteers nationwide to support care and benefits programs and local events.  The Chillicothe VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) recently joined a new Ross County United Way initiative to recruit more volunteers.  Information is available at:  http://www.volunteerrosscounty.org/

2 - PSA - VA's Summer of Service

  • Increasing Community Partners:  Committed to expanding current agreements to provide services and support reaching more than 15,000 Veterans and family.
  • Recruiting Medical Professionals:  Hiring clinicians and clinical support staff to further expand access to care and homelessness.
    • Congress:  Host Congressional members and staffs at VA facilities across the country.

The Department has an outstanding volunteer program, which will be highlighted throughout the country this summer.  VA will build upon the ongoing work of its more than 350,000 employees and 76,000 volunteers around the nation - and the nearly 470 volunteers at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center.  While the central focus of the campaign will be increasing volunteerism and partnerships, it will also provide individuals and communities an opportunity to support other important priorities. Despite a hiring effort that brought more than 11,000 net-new employees onboard over the past year, VA still needs more health care providers, claims specialists, medical support assistants, and cemetery directors to continue to expand needed services.  VA's partners can help by getting the word out this summer.

In an effort to improve the Veteran's customer service experience, VA has begun the most comprehensive reorganization in its history.  The initiative, called MyVA, has been guided by ideas and recommendations from Veterans, employees, and stakeholders.

"There is no mission more noble than serving Veterans and their families.  At VA, we constantly strive to improve the way we do our job," said McDonald.  "State by state, community by community, person by person, there are a number of ways we can all come together to serve Veterans.  From expanded partnerships with the private sector and non-profit organizations, to accelerating hiring, to celebrating the commitment of VA employees and volunteers - we need the help of communities everywhere to succeed."

Volunteers can help serve Veterans by visiting http://www.volunteer.va.gov/ to find out the needs of your local VA facility.  Follow #VASummerOfService on Vantage Point, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and join VA in caring for America's Veterans.  Those interested in learning about volunteer opportunities at the Chillicothe VA can also call Voluntary Service at 740-773-1141, extension 7420.

KROGER BRIDGE ST. RIBBON CUTTING ON REMODEL

On June 14th, we started the morning with a ribbon cutting on Bridge Street at the newly remodeled Kroger.  The grocery was bustling with activity as the employees prepared for all the visitors and the unveiling of the store.  We were joined by the Mayor of Chillicothe Jack Everson, our Chamber Board Members, our local County Commissioners, the "top brass" from Columbus for Kroger, and many members of the community.  Store Manager, Randy Wellinghoff, was overjoyed with the turn out and support of the community.  If a grocery store can be beautiful, this one certainly is!  Every vegetable was aligned and the floors sparkled so brightly it was blinding!  We are so happy that Kroger has invested in our community and if you haven't stopped in to see the upgrades, make sure you do.

DR. PATRICIA HALLER CUTS RIBBON ON NEW LOCATION

On May 14th, the ribbon was cut at the new location of Dr. Patty Haller at 64 Executive Center Drive in Chillicothe.  The building is spacious and full of the latest up-to-date optical equipment.  The one thing that hasn't changed is the wonderful team that works with Dr. Patty to make sure that you have an awesome experience from the time you walk in the building until the time you leave.  If you haven't had the chance to stop in and see the building, make sure you check it out.  I'm sure Dr. Patty would be happy to give you a tour!

CAC SELF HELP HOUSING RIBBON CUTTING

June is National Homeownership Month and we were fortunate enough to help CAC Self Help Housing celebrate 50 years of Self Help Housing and the 50,000th house.  This summer, USDA is highlighting partnerships to invest in the future of rural America.  We were on board to cut the ribbon to Amy Wilburn's home in Frankfort, Ohio.  Amy is a single working Mom and is extremely grateful for the opportunity to help build her very own home for her and her children.  Through the Self Help Housing Program of CAC, a not for profit entity, Amy was able to receive assistance with applying for the USDA 502 Direct Loan and was on her way to obtaining her dream of homeownership.  With grant and loan assistance as well as technical assistance to expand the supply of decent and affordable housing for low and very low-income persons in Ohio, she and her children will have a decent, safe, and energy efficient place to call HOME.  Amy logged over 1,000 hours herself in the building of her home.  She has learned skills that will help her through the rest of her life, like laying laminate flooring, siding the house, plumbing, and carpentry skills.

There were an abundance of tears as Amy gave her heartfelt speech and how grateful she and her children are for this wonderful opportunity.  There were also plenty of smiles as the children didn't stop smiling the entire time we were there.  Thank you to CAC Self Help Housing for building a better future and changing the lives of people in our community!
