In Honor Of Independence Day:
Our Country's 1st Entrepreneurial Enterprise

The United States of America has always prided itself on being innovative, self-reliant, and entrepreneurial. These character traits can be traced back to our founding, when Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and George Washington embarked upon our country's first entrepreneurial enterprise: its Declaration of Independence from the British crown. In today's video, historians, celebrities, and politicians all reflect on the impact this Declaration continues to have not just on our nation, but on the entire world.

It's A Chamber Buy One, Get One Offer

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce purchases many gift cards from its members throughout the year to be used as door prizes and giveaways for various promotional projects.  We are in the process of replenishing these gift cards and want to extend a special offer that's exclusively for Chamber members.

For every $10 gift card that is donated by your business, the Chamber will purchase another $10 gift card from you as well. Please mail your gift cards to the Chamber offices at 630 Market Street, Steubenville, Ohio 43952, and we'll reciprocate upon receipt.

And if you're not a business that offers gift cards, consider supporting your favorite restaurant, retailer, or other business by purchasing and sending one in from them.  We'll match those as well.

Amendment Creating Employer Liability for Guns in Parking Lots Added to Budget Bill

An amendment that infringes upon the private property rights of Ohio’s business owners and adds liability for all Ohio’s property was added by the Senate to House Bill 49, the state’s operating budget. This amendment creates a new civil penalty for violation of ORC 2923.1210 that was passed last year allowing individuals to store firearms in their privately-owned vehicles on employer property, and frankly any other private property, under certain circumstances. Simply put, this subjects employers and property owners to this significant unfettered civil liability.

Senate Bill 199, that was passed at the end of last year, bans employers from having a policy that prohibits, or has the effect of prohibiting, a person with a valid concealed handgun license from transporting or storing a firearm or ammunition in their privately-owned vehicle if the firearm and ammunition are locked in the trunk or closed compartment and the vehicle is in a location where it is permitted to be.

Insight on Banking Regulation from David Bowie and Queen

As bankers await the release of today’s stress test results, a familiar melody they should be listening to is from the Queen and David Bowie song, "Under Pressure." It’s a great tune released during the 1982 recession and one that might just be the theme song for the business community for the past several years.

Much of the talk in the wake of the stress tests will revolve around what the results say about the health of our nation’s most recognizable banks. But as important as it is to consider what our banking regulations mean for Wall Street and America’s capital markets system more broadly, we can’t lose sight of the consequences of those regulations for Main Street lending.

Entrepreneurs and small businesses are key engines of economic growth and job creation, and they depend on access to credit to fund start-ups, hire, fill new orders, and expand.
