HB 385 - Focused on Public Safety
|
|
Last week, I had the opportunity to present on an important public safety issue that is often overlooked. My newest piece of legislation,
House Bill 385,
would help ensure 911 dispatchers receive accurate location information so emergency responders are not delayed when trying to find callers in need.
Right now, Multi-Line Telephone Systems (MLTS), or systems that connect numerous “extension” phones to a central, computerized telephone, are frequently used by government agencies, banks, hotels, health care facilities, and schools.
When a person calls 911 from a MLTS phone, that system only relays the physical street address of the facility’s main building, and not where they are physically located (building, floor, or room number). When callers are unable to provide their specific location, either because they don't know or are incapacitated, emergency responders face avoidable delays that can often result in tragedy.
House Bill 385 would ensure MLTS phones are equipped to give 911 dispatchers the exact location where an emergency is happening. By automatically providing specific location information through the 911 system, emergency operators can immediately dispatch fire, police, or EMS responders to the caller’s exact location, at a point when time is of the essence.
When faced with an emergency, we depend on fast and reliable access to public safety resources. I look forward to continuing to move this critical piece of legislation through the committee process, for the safety of all Alaskans.
