Message from the President
  Lent
The month of February brings us to the season of Lent as Ash Wednesday is February 13.  May your hearts be filled with prayer, alms giving, and sacrifice.  I hope you are able to join us for Mass, Reconciliation and other prayer services we have during Lent. Watch the Friday Updates to stay involved!
  • The Faculty Council and Administrative Team is working on the 2013-2014 school calendar. We are seriously evaluating using the 2 hour late starts as the time for Professional Learning Communities instead of taking full days for staff development. Research has proven that more frequent and shorter periods of time for PLC is more effective than 1-2 full days per year. As we evaluate this proposal, we are looking at the possibility of before school childcare. We will have a final decision made yet this spring when you receive the 2013-2014 calendar for your family planning. We are also required to schedule 3 full days of staff training with the Diocese of Winona for the next two years in our calendars. The students would not be in attendance on those days.
  • The CSW Mass was a beautiful celebration for our community. Thank you for attending.
  • Have you sold your CUF Raffle tickets? If yes, thank you and know you can get additional ones. We appreciate everyone making a good effort to sell these raffles as we have set a goal of raising $35,000. Please turn in your money and ticket stubs as you sell them to one of the school offices...Remember we are accountable for all tickets.
  • Thank you to those who attend the Brown Bag Lunch with the President (an hour of conversation). The next one is February 14 at noon, Good Counsel Campus Media Center.
Please click here to take your " What do I value at Loyola Catholic School" survey. We need your feedback.

Band

Four Loyola students have been selected to take part in the Dorian Band Festival in Decorah, Iowa February 24 and 25.  Seniors Meghan Blaine (Clarinet), Olivia Zwaschka (Clarinet), Shelby Coulter (Euphonium) and Sophomore Taylor Barnes (Tuba) have received the honor. Dorian is a multi-state honor band. Students will travel to Luther College on Sunday morning to begin an intense rehearsal schedule leading up to a performance Monday night, February 25 at 6:30 pm in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall at Luther College. The performance is free and open to the public.  Brian Kotila, Loyola's instrumental music teacher, comments,  "This is an incredible opportunity and honor for these musicians. Being selected to this group says a lot about their talent and work ethic. This will expose them to a variety of music, conductors, and musicians.  I am glad they will get to take part in it."  This marks the 65th year of the Dorian Band Festival.

Primary News

We are excited to begin Preschool registration!  Loyola families may enroll their children in Preschool classes beginning today, and open enrollment begins on February 18.  Registering early is the best way to ensure placement in your first choice of Preschool class.  We are again offering 2-day morning, 3-day morning, 5-day morning and 5-day afternoon classes, as well as Child Watch before each class.

Kindergarten Round-Up is Tuesday, March 5, at 4:30pm and 6:30pm.   If you have a Kindergartener, we hope you will join us for an overview and specific information regarding Kindergarten.  Bring your 5 year old for a little orientation in a Kindergarten classroom!  Plan to be here for about one hour, including treats and a quick tour of our facility!

Enrollment Night for students in Grades 1-12 is Tuesday, March 12.  Come and update your registration packet, enter raffles to win great prizes (raffle tickets are free!) and enjoy supper with other Loyola families.

We enjoyed a wonderful National Catholic Schools Week celebrating the faith, leadership, service and academic excellence that are hallmarks of Loyola Catholic School.  A Mom emailed that her 4th grade daughter spontaneously helped her give a little Catholic Schools Week talk at Mass in their parish on Sunday.  Proof, she wrote, "of what Loyola provides for our young people...opportunity, confidence building, leadership, and utter safety to make mistakes and 'fall' in a God-centered environment...her speaking at church today is a true testament to what a wonderful place Loyola is!"

Catholic Schools Week always gives us a chance to celebrate who we are and what our faith urges us to do.  We highlighted our leadership; worshiped together; reached out to the community by making posters and placemats and bringing in donations for the guests at Project Community Connect; had fun learning through games; and shared our Loyola Spirit!

Grades 1 and 2 planned to enjoy DINO DAY at Gustavus Adolphus College on January 31.  Students would have visited six learning stations about dinosaurs and fossils, prepared by GAC J-Term students but the weather-related school cancellation that day cancelled our participation.

K-3 students will do their mid-year DIBELS tests (literacy skills) and begin their mid-year MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments (reading and math) next week.

Primary Staff participated in Mandatory Reporter training on January 30, fulfilling a requirement of the Diocese of Winona.

Ash Wednesday is February 13.  Primary students will join high school students for Mass (please check our weekly updates for the time).  We typically meet for weekly prayer and do some type of global outreach during the season of Lent.  More information will be found in our weekly updates.

Our February/July Birthday celebration is February 20 at 10:15 Mass.  All are welcome.

Scrip News

How do I get started?  Go to the Scrip page of the Loyola Catholic School website.  Read the Getting Started and Using Scrip links at www.shopwithscrip.com to learn about the Scrip program.  Enroll online at www.shopwithscrip.com and place your weekly orders by Monday at 10:00am.

How does it benefit our family?  Below is an answer from a Loyola family.  Family, friends, neighbors,  and coworkers can establish a Scrip online account at www.shopwithscrip.com.  When they designate your family by listing your family name in the student name field, their Scrip rebate is posted to your account.

"We have been using Scrip since the program started and we have literally raised hundreds of dollars toward our tuition and for the Loyola general fund.  We mainly use it for gas and groceries but also use it when we know we are going to do some work on the house or to pay off our Kohl's charge account. We have also found it to be convenient for our kids to have some fast food Scrip handy for quick meals between school and a game or to use out of town if the bus stops for food. Once you start, it gets to be a habit and you can find more and more uses. Scrip cards make great gifts. Once you see how rewarding it is, it's easy to get your family and friends to buy, too."
