September 2012
President/Principal Message and News

Our students and staff have had a wonderful and successful start to the school year. It is so reassuring to see the faces of happy and content children as they enter the school building on the first day. The apprehension of Kindergarten students coupled with the glow of "finally this is my senior year" make it so special to have both primary and secondary students on the same campus. It works, and our students are all the better for this combination.

It is a proud moment when you walk into the Fitzgerald building as you think of all the students who have walked those halls. Many of them, successful contributors to the community, still live in the Mankato area. I am happy to say that the Class of 1962, who attended  high school in the Fitz building, are having their class reunion on Good Counsel Campus during Homecoming Week. Please make sure to thank them for their legacy and for remembering their alma mater.

We are in the ninth day of school and already we are planning for the 2013-2014 school year! Next year's Activity Night will have a new look. I am thankful for the feedback from many of you.  Some of your comments/concerns are the same as the staff and I were thinking. Different ideas for next year may include....

  • Activity Night becomes "Back to School Night" for K-12 families
  • A schedule of events with specific times will be distributed prior to the event
  • Families will have the opportunity to complete paperwork in advance and/or sign forms electronically
  • It will have more of a fun and celebratory atmosphere
  • Checklists will be distributed alphabetically by last name, eliminating the long lines!

These are just a few initial ideas, and I welcome your additional suggestions.

I am initiating "Brown Bag Lunch with the President" for the 2012-2013 school year. The first one will be Sept. 19, noon - 1:00pm in the Conference Room on the Good Counsel Campus. This chatting lunch will give me an opportunity to hear your comments, suggestions, ideas, and dreams to help our school become the very best it can be. It will help all of us to "Raise the Standards" in communication and open dialogue.  Bring your lunch and join me on Sept. 19.

Are you planning to come to the "Back to School" Mass on Sept. 12, 10:30am in Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger Chapel on the GC Campus? Please be sure to call the office at 388.2997 if you are planning to stay for the picnic lunch.

A Message from Fr. Kunz

Greetings to all students, parents and staff!

The beginning of the school year brings new excitement to parishes and the entire community.  For the Board of Trustees, it means we also have to be prepared.  In early August, the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Council (formerly known as the LCS Board of Education) met for a workshop.  Marsha Stenzel, the Director of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Winona, conducted a session to clarify  the roles and responsibilities of both groups.  It was very informative and was based on standards from the National Catholic Educational Association.  We discovered that our Constitution and By-laws are well written and give us a good basis for maintaining our Catholic School system.  The challenge is to keep the vision active and communicated to all.

Our second meeting in August was the regularly scheduled one.  It was good to feel the excitement for a new school year as Shelley Schultz gave us an update on all the preparations.  The Trustees this year are the four pastors - Fr. John Wilmot (St. Joseph the Worker); Fr. Peter Nosbush (Holy Rosary) Fr. Mariano Varela (SS Peter and Paul, with Fr. Joseph LoJacono representing Fr. Mariano); and me, Fr. John Kunz (St. John the Baptist).  There are also two lay members on the Board.  We give thanks for Tim Murray's service the past three years.  His dedication to Loyola was always very generous throughout his term.  The two lay trustees currently serving are Michelle Zehnder-Fischer and Pat McDermott.  Sister Mary Kay Gosch is an ex-officio member representing the School Sisters of Notre Dame.  Together we seek to support the President in keeping Loyola moving in a positive and faith filled direction.  "Raise the Standards" - our 2012-13 theme - challenges us to work for improvement and growth.

May God bless Loyola Catholic School through the intercession of St. Ignatius Loyola and Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger.

Fr. John Kunz, Canonical Administrator and Chair of the Board of Trustees

Host Family Search
Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI), a nonprofit agency, is searching for a host family for Diego, a young man from Mexico.  Diego is able to afford tuition, and could attend Loyola Catholic School.  He would arrive mid September and would stay through early June.  A volunteer host family provides a room (which may be shared), meals, and a caring environment for their student.  Diego, age 17, is Catholic and he enjoys biking, camping, swimming, and listening to music.  He would be a junior at Loyola.  He speaks English, has medical insurance, and his own spending money.   If you are able to open your heart and home to Diego, please contact Mary Armstrong at 952-236-0745 / email: marmstrong@cci-exchange.org / website: www.cci-exchange.org

Should a family come forward who is interested in hosting, I would be happy to walk them through the process.  Diego would come on our J-1 visa program, and no I-20 would be necessary.  Diego would be monitored by a  local coordinator, and would be invited to attend orientations and group enhancement activities.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Best regards,

Fair Trade at Loyola Catholic School

The Fair Trade Committee is up and running again, planning many ways to educate others on the importance of Fair Trade. It will be our goal to find areas in which more Fair Trade products may be utilized within our school community. It was just last spring that Loyola was recognized as the first Fair Trade School in Minnesota and the third nationwide. The committee meets once or twice a month during lunch and sponsors special events throughout the school year. Fair Trade certified products come from farms and artisans that are working in safe and healthy environments, free from harsh chemicals and forced labor. Fair Trade organizations cultivate workplaces free of discrimination and abuse, and empower people to participate in the decisions that affect them. Fair Trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Loyola Catholic School will embark on a school wide fundraiser through Equal Exchange, which is a Fair Trade certified company. Our hope is that while raising money for our school we can also help to educate others about Fair Trade. Look for more information regarding the fundraiser in the October Communicator.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved please contact Emily Kracht at ekracht@loyolacatholicschool.org.

Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser

The Loyola Booster Club will hold a Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser on Friday, October 5 between 3:30 and 7:00pm at Tourtellotte Park.

Here's how it works.  Lagers will bring new Dodge vehicles to the event.  Parents, faculty, and guests can earn $20 for the Booster Club by taking a brief test drive and completing a short survey.  Anyone with a valid driver's license, age 18 or over, can drive for dollars.  The whole community is invited!

There's no sales pressure in this friendly, low-key program.  Lager's staff members have volunteered to work the fundraiser.  They will help out with the drives, answer product questions, and "talk cars" with interested parents and students.

The driving course is short - less than 10 minutes.  We could raise a lot of $$$ in less than four hours if everyone participates!

It's fun!  It's easy!  The Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser is a great way for us to earn funds for Loyola.  Please take a few minutes to support the kids!

Intermediate School (Grades 4-8) & Facilities

Welcome Back!

Parents of students grades 4-6, thank you for attending your child's conference.  Conferences provide a great way to get acquainted with teachers and check out classrooms and lockers.

On August 31 we held our first Prayer Partner activity, an afternoon filled with fun! It was a great way to get to know other students in our school.  Our Prayer Partner activities are held 3-4 times throughout the year especially during Advent, Lent, and Catholic Schools Week.

Just a reminder that all students need to have a pair of gym shoes worn just for P.E. in the gym.  The gym floor was recently redone and we are attempting to keep it in the best shape possible.

Students may be dropped off before school in front of the building.  Please do not stop on the Mulberry and 5th Street corner.  If students are dropped off on the SSPP side of the street, they should go through the tunnel to school.  School begins promptly at 8:00am.

At the end of the day, please do not park in the bus lane.  This area is strictly for buses.  Dismissal time for students taking the bus is 2:50pm.  Students are to wait for their bus outside in front of school.  Those students being picked up by car at the end of the day are dismissed at 2:52pm and are walked through the tunnel to meet their rides on the SSPP side of the street.  Cars may park in the SSPP parking lot or on 5th Street.  Please do not park on Mulberry Street as this creates visibility problems and becomes a safety issue.

MASSES - Masses for the Fitzgerald Campus are generally on Wednesdays at SS Peter & Paul Church beginning at 8:15am. All are welcome to attend.

Mass on Wednesday, September 12, will be an All-School Mass at 10:30am in Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger Chapel on the Good Counsel Campus.  Following Mass, students and staff will enjoy a picnic lunch with the Sisters. RSVP 388-2997 for lunch.

Please note there is no Mass on Wednesday, September 26.

BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS - Over the past couple of summers, we have made a number of improvements on the Fitzgerald Campus.  Among them are new bleachers in the gym, new seats in the theater, new ceilings, paint and carpet in some of the classrooms, and a refinished gym floor.  Many of these projects have been completed through the Capital Campaign and other generous donations.  We thank our benefactors and pray for them daily.  We invite you to check out "what's new" on the Fitzgerald Campus.

Health Class is back for 7th and 8th grade students

Ann Klasen will teach 7th and 8th grade Health!  The class curriculum follows the National and State Guidelines and Standards.  Topics for discussion include:

  • The Difference between Health and Wellness
  • Making Healthy Decisions
  • Stress Management
  • Mental and Emotional Health
  • Eating Responsibly
  • Building Relationships
  • Conflict Management and Preventing Abuse
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Energy Drinks
  • Safety

The class will incorporate current social health issues. For example, during the first week of school, classes discussed the "health" needs of people in the path of tropical storm/hurricane Isaac.  The students were phenomenal in their discussions and included prayers for all people involved.  The class is one of four quarter offerings rotating with General Music, Graphic Arts, and P.E.

Primary News

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Each fall is a new beginning for each of us, bringing with it a refreshing mix of jitters and excitement, new friends and bright ideas!  We have had a wonderfully smooth and happy start!

As a staff we have decided to express our Christian Character theme for the year very simply:  "Do the right thing."  We will help students to know "the right thing" in various situations and then support them in making good choices.

We welcomed two new staff members to the Primary:  Mrs. Cortnee DePoppe and Mrs. Rachel Seys.  Mrs. DePoppe serves as part time Kindergarten teacher, allowing us to group our Kindergarten class in three sections for reading and math instruction.  Mrs. Seys serves as our Clubhouse Director.  Both Cortnee and Rachel bring with them creativity, energy, experience, and a love for children.

We look forward to celebrating at Mass with our school family on Wednesday, September 12, as we commemorate 100 years of education on the Hill. Kindergarteners (class of 2025) will join us for the final blessing and song, and following Mass our seniors (class of 2013) will escort them and the entire school to a picnic lunch with the Sisters on the SSND convent grounds.

Primary students will celebrate Mass regularly on Wednesdays at 10:15am throughout the year.  You are always welcome to pray with us!  We will honor our friends in grades 1-3 who have an August or September birthday at Mass on September 19.  (Kindergarteners will begin celebrating at Mass with us in October and will celebrate their August, September, and October birthdays on October 17.)

September 19 is Lifetouch school picture day!  The photographers will be on site first thing in the morning for K-3 pictures.  It is a non-uniform day.

Students from the SCC nursing program will begin to visit Clubhouse in October.  This is our second year of cooperating with the nursing program and it is certainly a win-win.  The nursing students fulfill their program requirement for experience in interacting with school-age children, and we have extra helpers at Clubhouse.

Stay tuned for news about NWEA testing and Homecoming Week activities in early October.

*One half of our Kindergarteners attended class on Wednesday,  August 29 and the other half on Thursday, with all of them at school on Friday.  At dismissal time on Wednesday a sweet little someone came out the door, sobbing,  "I can't come to school tomorrow.  I have to wait 'til Friday!"

*At lunch a Kindergartener looked up at his teacher and said, "Just so you know...I'm in Kindergarten now!"

*One morning a first grader forgot and went into his last year's Kindergarten room.  He smiled, shook his head, and moseyed over to his first grade classroom.  When it happened again after lunch he mused, "Oh, yeah!  That's right.  Now I know why all the kids in there were just looking at me!"

*A little one gazed at a picture of Jesus welcoming the children displayed in her classroom and asked, "Who is that?"  When her teacher explained, the child followed up with, "But what is He wearing?"

Technology News
The school year kicked off with a bang for teachers with workshop week, followed by Loyola Catholic School's Second Technology Academy.  During the Tech Academy, Loyola teachers and staff spent the morning learning about various technology tools and use in the classroom.  Sessions included: Web 2.0 Tools, Organizing your MacBook, iPads in the Classroom, Google Docs & Mail, Video and Animation, and Wikis.

K-3 classrooms now have iPads! Each classroom has been equipped with three iPads for student and teacher use. The MacBooks from those classrooms have been moved to the Good Counsel Campus Media Center which allows K-3 students to benefit from a full computer lab.  Primary students may now utilize Loyola technology as an entire class for keyboarding skills, Accelerated Reader, Math IXL, creating short stories and word clouds,  and learning new skills and tools.

We are excited to introduce Kate Breiter as our new Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist who will join Justine Schrader in helping teachers integrate technology into their curriculum.  Kate continues to teach 8th grade American History while Justine will now teach 7th grade Geography and World Cultures.  John DuVal remains the Director of Information Systems.

Girls Club at LCS

Girls Club was created by Alumna, Amy Cooper (09), and is about empowering young women and building their self-confidence.  High school girls learn to lead responsibly and to inspire younger girls.  In turn, those younger girls learn and practice skills while having fun in a safe environment and without competition from their male peers.  We celebrate being girls, our diversity, and special qualities that can unite us.  We nurture our compassion and empathy for others as well as our strong mental talents.  This year's group of high school girls, led by senior Shelby Coulter, are currently in the planning process and are excited to work with their small groups!  Registration information and forms will be sent home with girls in grades 1-3 toward the end of September.
