God has blessed Loyola Catholic School! Kindergarten 1st Day

Thanks to the generosity of the Mankato area parishes and generous supporters, none of our students pay the full cost of their education at Loyola.  Over half of our families are able to provide the suggested tuition amounts and the rest are able to attend because of additional parish and donor generosity.

More families are choosing Loyola Catholic School for their children.  Our enrollment is up by 30 students for the 2013-2014 school year.

After two months as Loyola Catholic School President, I have discovered the great care parents have for our parish school.  I have received many communications about issues that are well thought out and well presented.  There is a great deal of wisdom in the community and for those who want our school to be the best possible, positive and constructive communication is most helpful.

Please continue to pray for our children, they are the future of the church!

A Message from Principal Sam Cotton

It is a great pleasure to serve as the Loyola Catholic High School Principal. I am honored and excited to be a part of such a devoted team of veteran teachers, administrators and staff members within the strong LCS family.

During my tenure as an educator I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve within the settings of Elementary, Middle, High School and Higher Education.   Throughout my experience I have also worked in a variety of school systems from Public, Private, Charter and ALC.  Within my experience as an educator I have held the role of Teacher, Principal, Board Member and Accreditation Data Liaison.

Being at Loyola is very rewarding because of our belief in teaching and modeling Gospel values within all that we do and say.  Our school pillars of Faith, Service, Academic Excellence and Leadership are the core principles we have used to develop our rigorous curriculum, championship athletics, Fair Trade program, clubs and student activities.  In keeping God at the center of all we do, we have been able to push our students to excel in academics, music, creative arts, sports, theater and speech while preparing them to be ready to meet the challenges of today and the world of tomorrow.

In the year ahead we will continue to push your children to do their best and seek out new opportunities to use their time and talents to help others, while developing lasting and positive relationships with all members of the LCS community and the world at large.  It will be the responsibility of all our staff members at LCS to ensure that all our students have the support they need to accomplish and succeed.  Throughout this year we look forward in regularly communicating the amazing things happening at LCS and what your children are doing and learning at our school.  We will do everything we can to provide the safest, most welcoming, and positive school setting possible while engaging your child in an environment that is challenging, active and worthwhile.  I believe this is going to be a great year at Loyola High School!

Student Council
The Student Council had an exciting summer!  The students not only planned and hosted the Freshmen and New Student Orientation event, they also began planning Homecoming and other activities for the year.

Three Student Council members, Rachel Schaub, Elly Orcutt, and Katerina Vetter, went to a Student Leadership Academy where they gained valuable insight to being servant leaders.  They all brought back wonderful and useful ideas which they have already started to implement.  New this year is an LHS Student Council website. There will be a link to this site from the Loyola home page.  On this site you will be able to see upcoming events.  Please visit and see details about Homecoming!

A Message from Principal William Schumacher

GRADES 7-8 MINI SCHOOL -  A Mini School was held on Thursday for the grade 7 & 8 parents and students.  The parents experienced a typical school day in the life of their students.  Thank you all for coming.  We look forward to a great year.

FITZGERALD CAMPUS MASSES - This year, Masses for the Fitzgerald Campus will be held on Wednesdays at SSPP Church beginning at 8:15am.  We hope you will join us numerous times throughout the year as the students partake and participate in these liturgies.  We welcome anyone who would like to join us.

REDEEMABLES -  You, your relatives, and your neighbors, can easily help with part of our annual budget by collecting "redeemables"; those items that you use and acquire every day.  We save HyVee receipts dates September - May, Campbells "Labels for Education",  "Boxtops for Education" labels, Milk Moola milk tops from cartons and bags and Land O'Lakes milk tops.  Redeemables can be turned in at any of the school offices.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DAY-TO-DAY THINGS ON THE FITZGERALD CAMPUS?

  • School begins at 8:00am and dismisses at 2:50pm (bus) and 2:52pm (car).  Car pickup is on the SSPP side of 5th Street.
  • Please call the office (388-9344) when your child is ill.  If they have diarrhea, vomiting or a temperature of 100 or more, they must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Homework will not be given the first day a child is ill.
  • If your child has an appointment during the day, please send a note or call the office.  Please come to the office to check your child out of school for the appointment.
  • Parents are encouraged to check Net Classroom to keep informed with your students' grades.
  • If your child will be taking medication at school, a parent needs to bring it in and fill out the appropriate form.  If it is a prescription medication, a doctor's order and signed form must be completed and can be faxed to us at 388-2750.  Medication will not be accepted from a student.
  • If you need to drop off an item for your student, please drop it off in the office to eliminate disturbing the classrooms.
  • If there is a change in the after school routine for your student, please call the office by 2:00pm in order for us to locate your student before the end of the day.  Please do not ask to have your child call you during the day.
  • The school is not responsible for cell phones and IPODS.  They can be turned in at the office any day for safe-keeping.

A Message from Sister Mary Beth and LCS Primary

We had a great turn out for beginning-of-the-year conferences, with everyone in good spirits as we melted together!  In January we'll probably wish for some of the heat we experienced in those last days of August.

It has been so good to see all of our returning students, and to welcome new-to-Loyola students in each grade, a large class of Kindergarteners, and almost 80 preschoolers!

Changes and additions to the primary staff for 2013-14 include:

Mrs. Deb Maus, after many years in grade 1, has moved to grade 2

Ms Emily Godfredson, after subbing for Mr. Stack last spring, has returned to grade 2

Mrs. Cortnee DePoppe, after teaching Kindergarten half-time last year, has returned to Kindergarten full time

Mrs. Rachel Seys has moved from Clubhouse Director to Preschool aide

Mrs. Martha Witte has joined our staff as Resource Teacher, helping with NWEA skills groups and enrichment opportunities for K-3 students

Mr. Sean Kopas, a senior at MSU in Parks, Recreation and Leisure, and Miss Sarah Fischenich, a senior at MSU in Elementary Education, have teamed up as Clubhouse Directors, with Mrs. Seys continuing to help out one day per week.  Both Sean and Sarah have had experience in working with youngsters and enjoy being outdoors.  Sean loves hockey and Lacrosse and Sarah loves music, gymnastics and softball.  Sarah is also a new volunteer faith formation leader at St. John the Baptist parish.

We enjoyed celebrating at our all-school, back-to-school Mass today!  As a primary school we provided four students for the entrance procession, led the psalm response, helped lead the intercessions and presented the gifts.  As is our tradition, our Kindergarteners, LCS class of 2026, joined us for the final blessing and song, and our seniors, LCS class of 2014, escorted them and the entire school to a picnic lunch with the Sisters on their lawn after Mass.  We were happy to welcome Bishop John Quinn of the Winona Diocese and our local pastors to celebrate with us.

Each Preschool class enjoyed their "Hello" Day early this week, with time for children to explore their classrooms and teachers to meet with parents, then started regular classes on Thursday and Friday.

On the first Friday of each month we celebrate Spirit Day when children are invited to wear clothing displaying the Loyola name and/or logo.   In October, Spirit Day will coincide with Loyola homecoming "Blue and Gold" day.  Show your Loyola spirit by wearing school colors on October 4!

Primary students will participate in Mass each Wednesday morning at 9am.  Classes take turns planning and leading at these Masses, and parents are always welcome to pray with us.  Our first Mass, on September 11, will be planned by Mrs. Gerlach's third grade class.  Each month at Mass we celebrate the gift of life with children whose birthdays occur during that month.  September birthdays will celebrate on the 25th.  Stay tuned for details and a special invitation from your ''birthday" child.

Our Kindergarteners are already busy working on the National Anthem (they did work on it in 5-day Preschool classes last year) so they'll be ready to join the class of 2014 in leading it before our home football game on September 20.

Parents will receive information about upcoming events in our weekly newsletter, sent each Friday afternoon as part of THE COMMUNICATOR.  Look for details about Life Touch picture day September 18, singing at the game on September 20, Birthday Mass September 25, vision/hearing screening on October 7, and more.  Individual teachers will also send weekly newsletters announcing events, curriculum topics, efforts and achievements.   Be sure to read each regularly so you are well informed and up to date.

*On Tuesday I asked a little girl how her summer went. "It was really really lllllllllllloooooonnnnnnggggggg!"  she moaned.

*I called a youngster by his older brother's name.  He grinned and said, "That's OK.  I'm a mini him!"

*A youngster came in with a slight injury.  "What happened?" we asked.  "I stepped on myself!" he replied.

*On Wednesday, our second day of school, we received inquiries from two families wanting to register their little ones for Kindergarten NEXT fall.  Yeah!

*A beautiful little Kindergartener told me, "I know 5 plus 5!" then proceeded to hide her fingers under the table as she obviously counted them.  "It's 10!" she beamed, then leaned in as though to tell me a secret and added, "I counted!!"   I shared that story with a dear friend (my favorite college professor) and she smiled and said, "What a blessing to spend time with such innocence!"

How right she is.  How blessed we are to spend our days with young children, fresh from Heaven and shining with grace and goodness.   Thank you for sharing your little ones with us!

Those of you who know me are aware that I grew up on a small farm in Madison Lake, attended All Saints Elementary School, and graduated from Loyola High School,  Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, and Wheelock University in Boston.   I have spent many years with that "innocence" mentioned by my friend, and I love serving at Loyola.

Loyola is a school where children thrive and shine, a school with a welcoming spirit and great heart, a school  that has stood the test of time.  Thank you for choosing Loyola!

Technology

As the school years starts with another round of issuing laptops to students, we encourage all parents to review this laptop information with their students.  While all students are required to pass a quiz based on the information, it is helpful for everyone to be aware of laptop information.

You may also notice that students have the same white MacBooks as previous years. Looks can be deceiving, though!  Over the summer, all laptops were upgraded with Solid State Drives and more RAM, which will improve the student learning experience.  We look forward to another year of implanting and improving technology in the classrooms to further enhance the education of all Loyola students.

Food Service

Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias!

This fall, Loyola Catholic School cafeterias are once again meeting the challenges of the new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that school meals are healthy and well balanced.

We're always working to offer healthier and tastier choices.  We offer students:

  • milk, (fat-free, fat-free chocolate, or 1% white)
  • a variety of fruits and vegetables (students must choose at least one serving of produce but may choose up to four and may have second servings)
  • more proteins and grains
  • strict limits on saturated fat, trans fat and portion size of the main entre
  • age-appropriate calorie counts  (K-3 550-650;   4-8  600-700;   9-12 750-850)
  • turkey corn dogs and sausage
  • elimination of extra salt and high calorie condiments

Seconds on the main entre will be sold at extra cost to students in grades 4-12 only.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families too!  Our school lunches cost only

K-3  $2.35    4-8  $2.45     9-12  $2.50

Here is a recipe for Crispy Roasted Chickpeas: 15 oz. can garbanzo beans-1 tablespoon olive oil - Salt - Spice blend of your choice  (we used seasoning salt and garlic powder for the 2-Bite Club).  Preheat oven to 400. Drain garbanzo beans. Rinse with water. Shake off excess water .  Place beans on paper towel to drain. Place another paper towel on top and pat dry. Drizzle with olive oil using your hands to toss and coat.  Roast 30-40 minutes or until beans are golden brown and crunchy . Season with spice blend of your choice such as Garlic powder, Chili powder, Curry powder, Cumin.  We also tried cinnamon and sugar, which would be good on ice cream.

Advancement

The Advancement Office has a lot planned for this year.  We are blessed to have a strong group of volunteers and staff to create and run new events and fundraisers.  With all that great talent we know this year will be a success.

We have engaged Cindy Matuska, Angie Winch, Marie Wood and JoDee Devaney to help with special projects in the Advancement Office.  So in addition to their extensive volunteering you will see them helping as project staff.  Thank you to these fine women who said "yes" when we asked them to share their talent and time.

We hope you enjoyed Stay Connected Week this summer.  This inaugural event brought in over $1,700 for the Annual Fund.  Thank you to the participating restaurants:  Pub 500, Chipotle, Yogurt Creations, Wagon Wheel, Pho Saigon, Pita Pit, Jersey Mikes, 5 Guys, and Buffalo Wild Wings.  We hope you had a chance to get together with other Loyola families and enjoy these wonderful local restaurants.  Thank you to Cindy Matuska for coordinating this fun week.

The Loyola Golf Classic was Friday, August 30th.  Great weather and a great event resulted in a wonderful time for everyone!  Held at the Mankato Golf Club, the event was a best ball, 18 hole tournament with all proceeds used to support the school.  Thank you to co-chairs Tom Leiferman and Rick Haefner for putting on a great tournament.

 Scrip News - ScripNow eCards

We have been dedicated Scrip users for quite some time and started looking for additional ways to use Scrip even more.  ScripNow eCards have made it easier to do exactly that.

We shop on Amazon on a regular basis.  Even though Amazon is at a 3% rebate, I know that it's worth it when I think about how much I purchase from them in a year's time.

Our daughter is in 9th grade this year, her first year without uniforms, so back-to-school shopping was a bigger deal this year.  We went shopping at the Mall of America.  I had no idea in what stores she would find clothes, so I didn't buy Scrip with my regular weekly order.  Instead, I used ScripNow in the stores where she picked out clothes.  It took a couple of extra minutes, but again, was worth it to me.  An employee at Gap was great.  She added up all of Kenady's things, put the order in suspense, I ordered ScripNow, showed her the codes on my phone, and completed our purchase.  With Gap at a 24% rebate and a $200+ purchase, it was worth the extra steps.  We did the same thing at American Eagle (10%) and other stores as well.

Other ScripNow eCards I have used include Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Bath & Body Works, Old Navy, Overstock.com and Dell.

With many of us using smart phones now, it is a very simple process.  If you shop online, it's even easier.  We have been able to earn a significantly higher amount of credit by using ScripNow eCards as well as the other Scrip options.
