District News
Superintendent's Corner
This week, I was fortunate enough to attend the state education convention with three of our school board members. We attended sessions from districts across the state to hear stories and learn about initiatives that are making a difference in improving student achievement and organizational effectiveness. We attended sessions on community engagement, facilities, human resources, leadership, school finance, and student achievement. We discovered that there is a lot to learn, but there is also a lot to be proud of at Whitnall.

While I'm sure you are aware that there is no school for students on Monday, I wanted to share what our staff will be learning during our professional development day. The morning will be spent learning about trauma-sensitive practice and brain development. The afternoon will focus on district goals relating to culture and climate and how to continue to support an environment of ownership, belonging, and respect for staff, students, and families.

In light of the many teaching and learning conversations that are taking place across our district, we would like to invite all parents to an informational meeting facilitated by Dr. Lisa Olson, Superintendent, and Lynn LeRoy, Director of Teaching and Learning, on Thursday evening, February 1st. At this time, we will lay out and explain the updates that are beginning to take place at various levels. In the process, we hope to clear up some misconceptions and miscommunication, as well as solicit input and feedback from our families.

Please fill out the Google form below to indicate your attendance, and log your questions so that we may ensure responses to all.

Required Civics Assessment
As part of Wisconsin Act 59, all students in the state of Wisconsin, starting with the class of 2017, must pass the State Civics Exam. This exam consists of 100 questions that are identical to the 100 questions that comprise the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services exam. The exam can be taken more than once. Students must receive a score of 65 in order to graduate from a WI public, charter, or private school. The exam will be given to both juniors and seniors in a multiple choice format. A passing score will be recorded on the student’s official transcript, and they will not need to take the exam again. Preparation materials can be found on the Grading & Assessment page of the WSD website.

  • Seniors will take the exam on the morning of February 20th
  • Juniors will take the exam on the morning of February 21st.
  • Retake dates TBD
