Superintendent's Corner
While we appreciate our teachers throughout the school year, this week provides us the opportunity to celebrate our teachers as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to our PTOs, families, and principals for providing treats and other recognition to our teachers this week.

As parents, you are able to witness the impact a teacher has on your child's growth as a person and not just with their learning. I am able to witness the work behind the scenes that teachers do to prepare for their work in the classroom and the amount of time and effort they expend in providing the very best experiences and environments for their students. The parents, students, and community of Whitnall should be extremely proud of the teachers who work with our students each and every day.

This past week, I was able to celebrate academic excellence at the NHS induction ceremony and athletic recognition at the senior athletic banquet. A group of enthusiastic WMS students also organized and ran a carnival for dysautonomia. Yesterday, I also participated in Game Day at HCE as part of the ABC countdown to the end of school!

Remember!

There is no school on this upcoming Monday, May 15th!

Important Change in Last Day of School
In reviewing the 2016-17 calendar, it was noted that the last day of school, June 9th, was a full day of school. In the past, this has been a half day for a variety of reasons. Since the high school students finish early on June 9th due to the semester exam schedule, we are changing the last day of school to a half day for all buildings. We recognize the challenges when a family has students in different buildings with different schedules and try to avoid this from occurring whenever possible. Therefore, the dismissal times for Friday, June 9th are as follows:

10:45 - WHS
10:50 - WMS
11:20 - EES and HCE

If you have any questions, please contact your building principal.
Strategic Planning Event | June 15th
The next step in our journey toward personalizing learning is to develop a strategic plan. We want to begin that development with a community conversation: what do we want from a Whitnall graduate? Join us on June 15th for a strategic planning event! First, a cookout from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Then, a meeting from 6:30 PM to 9PM. Both parts of the event will be held in the WHS Cafeteria.

"Start spreading the news…”  The annual 7th grade trip to New York City is in motion! Next year's trip is scheduled for October 17-20, 2017. The New York experience is designed to expose students to a variety of geographical, cultural, and social venues and events, expanding their knowledge of people and places far removed from our Whitnall Community.

Edgerton Elementary
School Forest Field Trips

During the next two weeks, all EES students will have the opportunity to visit the Whitnall School Forest. Elementary students will be given the opportunity to enhance and expand their learning in a natural environment. Through a cooperative experience with Advanced Placement high school students, EES students will have hands-on, active experiences to acquire knowledge and skills that promote responsible global citizenship.

Grade 5 Camping Trip

From Wednesday, May 17 - Friday, May 19th, our fifth grade students, teachers, and parent chaperones will be heading to Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center in Wisconsin Dells for an outdoor learning experience. The fifth graders will be studying ecosystems by pulling up waders and scooping up macro invertebrates. Students then look at them through microscopes, classify the species, and determine if the water supply is healthy based on what they find. Students will also learn about the importance of the French fur trade in Wisconsin during the 1800’s while canoeing along the Wisconsin River. Finally, while learning outdoor survival skills, students build relationships with each other through team bonding.
