District News
Superintendent's Corner
As parents, you are aware that students had a four-day school week due to professional learning on Monday, May 15th. What you may not be aware of is what educators do during professional learning days. Each professional learning day is different but is focused on bringing our K4-12 teachers together to enhance instructional skills, prepare for new changes in curriculum, learn new strategies--all to have a direct impact on the students they teach. On Monday , Whitnall educators came together to review the 2016-17 district goals and progress throughout the school year. All educators provided input through feedback circles on instructional priorities and where we are seeing success and where we need to focus for next year. We value the feedback of our educators and will use the feedback in setting priorities for 2017-18.

During the week, I was able to attend Falcon girls' softball games and senior night for girls' soccer.  Our middle school also hosted a track meet invitational at Falcon Field. Our WHS AP students have been in the school forest with our elementary students from both EES and HCE.

Please be sure to see the information below about a strategic planning survey you will be receiving via email and the June 15 community conversation event. I'd love to see as many parents as possible!

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] and follow me on Twitter!
June 15th

Join us in conversation about what we want for the learners at Whitnall! First, a cookout at 5:30 PM. Then, a meeting from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Both parts of the event will be held in the WHS Cafeteria.

Let's answer the following questions!

  • What do we want for all our students?
  • What should define us?
  • What actions do we desire?
Be sure to register for the event here !

Strategic Planning Survey

You will be receiving an email from School Perceptions today. The email will take you to an important survey about Whitnall's priorities. Please complete the survey, and do so before June 5th!

Important Change in Last Day of School
In reviewing the 2016-17 calendar, it was noted that the last day of school, June 9th, was a full day of school. In the past, this has been a half day for a variety of reasons. Since the high school students finish early on June 9th due to the semester exam schedule, we are changing the last day of school to a half day for all buildings. We recognize the challenges when a family has students in different buildings with different schedules and try to avoid this from occurring whenever possible. Therefore, the dismissal times for Friday, June 9th are as follows:

10:45 - WHS
10:50 - WMS
11:20 - EES and HCE

If you have any questions, please contact your building principal.
Tutor List

Per requests from families, we have compiled a list of staff available for tutoring. You can view the list here!
Social Emotional Needs

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, one in five children and adolescents experience a mental health problem during their school years.

Good mental health is an important component to the success of our children in school and life. Whitnall School District recognizes this and will be focusing on preventative services. During the 17-18 school year, we are committed to:

  • Establishing connections between school, home, and the community

  • Establishing building level multi-disciplinary teams, which will include school social workers, school psychologists, guidance counselors, and administrators working together to support learner needs

  • Establishing a framework of multi-tier system of support (MTSS) that will provide social emotional support at Tier 1 (universal- for all students), Tier 2 (targeted - some students), and Tier 3 (intensive - few)
