Dr. Donovan Honored with Leonard Tow Award
|
|
Congratulations to
Colleen Donovan, MD
, assistant professor of emergency medicine, who is this year's faculty recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.
The award, sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, is given annually to a member of the faculty who best demonstrates the foundation’s ideal of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues, as well as demonstrated clinical excellence.
Chosen by our medical students, Dr. Donovan was announced as this year’s award winner during the Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction Ceremony earlier this month, to which Dr. Donovan was inducted. Students honored her at the event by saying, “Humanism to us means so much more than the professionalism we carry in a hospital setting. The way we’re taught in a classroom setting can mold us into physicians who can better communicate with our patients and has a direct impact on how we interact with others in the hospital. To us, no one has had a bigger impact on the entire student body than Dr. Donovan. Dr. Donovan leads our simulation sessions throughout medical school. She doesn’t just walk us through the next clinical steps but really immerses us in the proper way to address and interact with patients and team members in difficult situations. Not only is she a great teacher, but she serves as a role model to all of us students.”
The students also noted, “Dr. Donovan teaches us enthusiasm for teaching and medical education, engenders trust and confidence, and is approachable and accessible to us. She is committed to reflection and objective self-evaluation of not only our skills but of her own. Most, if not all, of the cases we work with during simulation are based on clinical cases that she has seen and learned from and she knew she could use to teach us valuable lessons. To us, she embodies everything the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine stands for. More informally, we think she’s awesome and really fun and has made our medical experience better. We know how much time she dedicated to teaching us and we want her to know all of us students really appreciate everything she does.”

New Rutgers App Seeks to Reduce Infant Mortality
|
|
The
SIDS Center of New Jersey
has published a new app, expanding its education program to prevent sudden infant death. The app,
SIDS Info
, supplements the program’s safe infant sleep education programs in order to keep New Jersey rates of sudden unexpected infant death among the lowest in the United States.
The free app was developed by
Barbara Ostfeld, PhD
, and
Thomas Hegyi, MD
, both professors in the Department of Pediatrics and the center’s program and medical director, respectively. It includes the American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guidelines for infants from birth to 12 months, as well as links to educational websites, a Q&A on safe infant sleep and resources, such as contact information for smoking cessation and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
SIDS Info
is available on
iPhone
and
Android
and was funded by the center through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health. In addition to parents, the app is being promoted to professionals who interact with families at organizations such as hospitals, the Maternal and Child Health Consortia, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency and child care programs. The app also serves as a continuing education tool for health care providers, who can download courses on safe sleep for free.
