Dr. Vikas Nanda Part of Team to Identify Protein that May Have Existed When Life Began
A team of Rutgers scientists found among the first and perhaps only hard evidence that simple protein catalysts – essential for cells, the building blocks of life, to function – may have existed when life began. The study, co-authored by Vikas Nanda, PhD , associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, used computer modeling to explore a primordial peptide, or short protein, and what it may have looked like, as well as its possible chemical functions. The study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society .

HIPHOP Promise Clinic Hosts Conference
The HIPHOP Promise Clinic hosted the first New Jersey Student-Run Free Clinic Conference in August. The goal of the conference was to promote and support the existence of student-run clinics at each New Jersey institution. The meeting allowed the medical students to begin a conversation across institutions about best practices for resources, systems and health policy that benefit patients.
The HIPHOP Promise Clinic is a student-run free clinic, overseen by volunteer faculty advisors, that provides free primary care services to the uninsured clients of Elijah’s Promise. The HIPHOP Promise Clinic is built on a continuity of care model and provides basic health maintenance, screenings, medications and laboratory work.
