National Fry Day Raises Awareness About Skin Cancer Prevention
|
Today is National Fry Day, and although you are probably thinking that means it's time to indulge in really unhealthy food as a kickoff to the holiday weekend and unofficial start to summer, it's actually a day created by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention held annually to raise awareness about the dangers of overexposure to the sun.
Sun exposure is the largest factor for development of skin cancer later in life, according to
Bahar Firoz, MD, MPH
, associate professor, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, who
emphasizes that it's important to take some simple precautions to ensure you're doing your best to protect your skin from sun damage.

Watch
Dr. Firoz's video to learn more about the simple precautions that you and your family can take to ensure the best protection from the sun's harmful rays, including:
- Shift activities to early morning or dusk
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen or sunblock and apply it liberally, and
- Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours -- more often if you're in the water.

Dr. Lepore Publishing Book on Study of Einstein's Brain
|
|
For nearly two decades,
Fredrick Lepore, MD
,
professor of neurology and ophthalmology, has had the unique opportunity to study the brain of Albert Einstein. In 2012, Dr. Lepore and his colleagues published their research of photographic images taken of Dr. Einstein's brain in the journal
Brain
. Now, Dr. Lepore is detailing his journey in a new book published by Rutgers University Press,
Finding Einstein's Brain
,
which will be available for purchase at the end of June. According to the book's description, "
Following his death in 1955, Einstein’s brain was removed and preserved, but has never been fully or systematically studied. In fact, the sections are not even all in one place, and some are mysteriously unaccounted for! In this compelling tale, Frederick E. Lepore delves into the strange, elusive afterlife of Einstein’s brain, the controversy surrounding its use, and what its study represents for brain and/or intelligence studies."
Dr. Lepore and his knowledge of Einstein's brain were featured this month in
New Jersey Monthly Magazine,
highlighted in the post above on the magazine's Facebook page. Read more
