The latest news and updates from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
Match Day 2018!
Match Day at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School proved to be another exciting milestone for the Class of 2018 as our fourth-year medical students learned where they will continue their medical training as residents. Following short congratulatory remarks by school leadership and a sparkling cider toast by the Alumni Association president, the 127 members of the class opened envelopes that contained a glimpse into their futures, sharing their excitement with friends and family in attendance.

Ninety-seven percent of the class matched to a program of their choice, exceeding the national match rate of 94 percent. Thirty-five of the students matched to programs in New Jersey, 23 of whom matched to a program of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS); 17 students matched to a Robert Wood Johnson Medical School program. Fifty-three of the students -- 42 percent -- matched to a primary care program (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or obstetrics/gynecology). View the Match list here .

In addition, the Office of Graduate Medical Education offers congratulations to all our residency programs and their leadership for having another successful match with all 109 positions that were offered being filled, in addition to the two spots offered through the San Francisco Match for Urology. School residency programs that matched Robert Wood Johnson Medical School students include: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine- New Brunswick, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, General Surgery and Integrated Vascular Surgery.
Joining the students from our school, incoming residents will include individuals from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Cooper, Drexel, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, both SUNY Upstate and Downstate, University of Southern California and Yale, among many others.

We invite you to view the fun online by visiting the school's Snapchat account at rwjms and searching for #RWJMSMatch and #Match2018 on Instagram and Facebook . Look for a photo montage of the event in next week's issue.

We are truly proud of the Class of 2018 and are looking forward to awarding their degrees at Convocation on May 14!
Students Walk Out in Support of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School
First- and second-year medical students participated in the national student walk out at noon on Wednesday, March 14, in honor of the 17 people who lost their lives at Majorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Joined by our faculty, along with faculty and students from Rutgers School of Public Health and Rutgers School of Health Professions, the students advocated for measures to reduce gun violence and increase mental health treatment. Invited speakers who supported the students’ efforts to regard gun violence as a public health issue, included RBHS Chancellor Brian Strom, MD, MPH ; Dean Sherine E. Gabriel, MD, MSc ; Nicole Krumrei, MD , assistant professor and trauma surgeon at the medical school; and Bernadette C. Hohl, PhD, MPH, assistant professor, School of Public Health. Closing the event, students from the medical school and the physician assistant’s program at SHP spoke and read aloud the victims’ names, along with a short tribute on each individual.

The event was coordinated by the Association of Women Surgeons and American Medical Women's Association chapters at the medical school and complimented an event hosted by Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. Anna Olds , third-year medical student, who led the event, said, “All of the speeches were incredible, filled with information, passion, and, most importantly, hope. I am also very impressed with our M1 and PA students for their moving talks. I am hopeful that things will begin to change, and I think it is incredibly important that we all stay active and use our voices.”

Join fellow students and entrepreneurs at the BEN Health Innovation Summit
The Rutgers Biomedical Entrepreneurship Network (BEN) welcomes students and faculty to its Health Innovation Summit on Saturday, April 7, where industry leaders will speak during keynote and panelist sessions on the evolving state of health care. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Arline and Henry Courtyard at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Along with the summit, BEN is hosting a pitch competition, in which teams are welcome to submit great ideas in health care by March 26. Teams of two to six can  submit  an outline of their solution to one of the following prompts:
  • Patient Safety and Adherence
  • Medicine over the Internet
  • The Emergency Medicine Experience
  • Something Undiscovered

All submissions are due by March 26. Finalists will be selected and announced by March 30 and will workshop ideas and hone their pitches with our experts before presenting to the forum. Non-finalists can take advantage of the available expertise to improve their ideas. Winners selected by a diverse panel of judges are awarded with the resources to turn their vision into reality: up to $10,000 in award money and support from the visionaries at the New Jersey Health Foundation.

The summit is sponsored by Pfizer and the awards are generously provided by the New Jersey Health Foundation.
