President's Message
Dear AAUW Members,

I was thinking this week about Thanksgiving 2017. My mind went back to my childhood where we sat around the Thanksgiving table and contributed what we were thankful for that year. I think most of you would know that I am thankful this year that my sister lived through five major surgeries, several infections and is now swimming laps in the pool. Not what you'd call an uneventful year. But life can change in a microsecond. Right now things seem peaceful and I am truly thankful for that.

I want to share with you the Editor's Letter from Better Homes and Gardens, November 2017. This is not the magazine I'd use for philosophical guidance generally; but according to my perspective, Editor in Chief Stephen Orr hit it soundly out of the park. He was folding laundry and usually considered it a boring and mundane chore. Then he went on to say, "I was always taught that if I'm fortunate to be in a position with both feet on the ground, I should use my stability to offer a hand to someone else. But sometimes I forget as I go through the checklist of everyday life.

Thanksgiving is traditionally the time for us to remember how blessed we are. As the big meal winds down and we do our chores - loading the dishwasher, cleaning the countertops, and putting away the leftovers - I'll take the time to relish the concept of home - that warm place filled with the scent of roasted turkey, onions, butter and celery. How do we take a feeling of security and gratitude and share it with someone who would be relieved, if not thrilled, to be sitting in front of their TV folding socks? We all know how to do it: volunteering and donating money or supplies. But actually doing it is the key. During this celebration of plenty, it's good to remind ourselves that folding the laundry in itself is a blessing everyone deserves."

Happy Holidays in the coming months.

Affairs of Estate

This is a 2018 educational fundraiser. It will be presented in six sessions: January 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 25, 2018 from 1:30-2:30 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1850 6th Ave, Vero Beach. The fee is $50 and Mel Ratcliff is donating the proceeds to AAUW Vero Beach Branch.

Helping us decipher the legalese of estate planning and associated documents into everyday terms will be Mel Ratcliff. This is so important to women considering estate planning or expecting to serve now or in the future as Trustee, Successor Trustee, Power of Attorney Agent, Health Care Surrogate or Personal Representative. This program is for women only and for education purposes.

Mel Ratcliff is a Financial Advisor and Founder of the boutique investment firm Blue Chip Diva, mratcliff@bluechipdivas.com, and has been "Making Wall Street work for Women" since 1988. He is well known for his creation of Explore & Explain (registered name) programs that assist women in navigating various transitions in their unique financial journeys. Many of our members have graduated from his Women on Wall Street educational program. Registration information will be in next month's Hotline.
