 Principal's Message

The first full week of school went very well.  I've seen lots of smiling faces coming off of the buses each morning and in classrooms I have visited. All of our staff has been worked to support one another and our students with community building activities throughout the building.

Many thanks to our PTSG for supporting our Kindergarteners as they have transitioned into the school with bus and lunch helpers. We also have older students who have helped our Kindergarten friends get to classes each morning. It truly takes a village!

This past Wednesday, I was thrilled to see so many students who participated in our Summer Reading Challenge. We celebrated with extra recess and the weather was perfect. We encourage our students to keep up the great reading habits throughout the year.

Please take a moment to read through our DT Trailblazer. It is full of a lot of valuable information.

As we start this new year, just as a reminder, all students need to be picked up and dropped off in the back of the building at Door 9.  The only exception to this would be if you are volunteering in our building at dismissal.  We appreciate your cooperation.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Greene

Hearing Screening

Indiana State law requires students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 to have their hearing screened. All kindergarten students and all students new to BCSC will be tested as well. The Brownsburg Speech and Language Pathologists will be conducting hearing screenings at each school.

Students who do not pass their hearing screenings will receive paperwork notifying you of the results. (If your child does not pass their hearing screening, you will be notified of pass/did not pass results when a re-screening is done as well.)

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's hearing.

Character Education

The Brownsburg Community School Corporation character trait for the month is

RESPECT

Respect is showing kindness and courtesy towards others. This month all students will be learning about how to manage conflicts in a respectful way.  Just as we have common character traits at all elementary schools, all BCSC elementary students will be learning how to solve conflicts using Kelso's Choice.  The philosophy behind Kelso's Choice is that students are smart enough and strong enough to solve small problems, those that are not scary or dangerous, on their own.  For big problems, students should tell an adult they trust.

In the classroom, students have learned the difference between small problems and big problems.  For small problems, students will be asked to try at least 2 of Kelso's Choices before going to an adult.  These are the 9 choices the students have learned:

Having 9 choices gives students many options when trying to solve problems, since some choices will work better than others depending on the situation.  Students have been encouraged to try using Kelso's Choice at home and other places they go, too!

Respect may be our character trait for the month of August, but we encourage students to practice it all year long.

Volunteer Criminal Background Check Policy
In an effort to keep our school safe, all volunteers much complete a volunteer application form/criminal background check request and be approved as a volunteer prior to volunteering. The form must be completed at least two (2) weeks prior to the event in which the volunteer chooses to participate in.

Volunteer background checks are completed by the Human Resource Department using the State of Indiana Police criminal records database and the sex offender database.

Volunteer criminal background checks are valid for 3 years. After 3 years volunteers will be required to complete a new volunteer request form and the status as a volunteer will be reconsidered.

Volunteer criminal background checks are required for:
-attending or assisting with class parties
-assisting school staff in the classroom or school building
-having lunch at school building with a student
