Principal's Message

Happy Friday Delaware Trail Families,
I hope that you have had a great start to the month of February. The groundhog DID see his shadow which means we 6 more weeks of winter! We plan on getting the students outside during recess in the coming months, so please remember to have your child dress appropriately for the weather.

On Friday, February 10th, we will have our classroom parties. Please remember that all folks volunteering or attending the parties MUST have a background check on file. We cannot let anyone in without it. This is a measure put in place to keep or students and staff safe and we appreciate your support with this. Our annual "Muffins with Moms" event is coming up on Friday, February 17th. This is open to all moms, grandmas, aunts or women who impact the lives of our students.    Finally, "Time with Teacher" will be on Monday, February 27th after school. If your child is participating, please stand by for directions for pick up that afternoon.

As a reminder, we have our ISTEP testing window from February 27th-March 10th for grades 3-5 We will have IREAD testing from March 13th- 17th for 3rd grade. Please refrain from scheduling appointments for your children in grades 3-5 during these windows of time.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Greene

A Note From the Nurse
Outdoor recess is a vital part of the school day. It is a time for students to burn off some of that energy they have stored up all morning, get some exercise and socialize with their peers. Now that the weather is getting colder, please remember to send your students to school with cold weather attire. Winter coats, hats, gloves and long pants are most appropriate on these cold days along with shoes or boots and socks. Corporation policy uses a feels-like temperature of 10 degrees or less as the cut off for deciding if recess will be inside or outside. If your child does not have the appropriate winter clothing, please let the school nurse know so that we can help all of our students stay warm during the colder months. Thank you for your assistance and continued support! We are looking forward to a healthy and happy winter season!

REMINDER...
Valentine's Day is just around the corner! If your child will be bringing in Valentine cards in for his or her classmates, please remember that students are not allowed to attach any food items to the cards. Thanks so much for helping to keep all of our students safe.

Thanks so much,
Rhealene Hobbs RN

All moms or mother figures are welcome to come.
It's a free breakfast with muffin, pastries, coffee, juice, and milk.
A great time to have a little one on one time with the kids before school.
We'd love for some dads to step up and help with the volunteering so that the moms can hang out with their kids. My email address is   [email protected] if anyone is interested in volunteering.

Nurse Notes
Sooooo what about sleep?
Everybody struggles with sleep from time to time. We know that a bad night now and then can cause some major problems with our ability to function at our best.

Children can also struggle to get adequate rest. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children ages 5 to 12 get 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep helps a student pay attention better in school and be a more creative learner and problem solver. A well-rested student will also be healthier and have more stable moods. All in all, a student who gets good sleep interacts better with parents, siblings, teachers and friends!

Here are some tips to help your student sleep well:
  • Make sure their bedroom is cool, dark and quiet.
  • Set them a regular scheduled bedtime, and stick to it.
  • Don't allow any caffeine after 5pm.
  • Encourage running and playing after school, but not too close to time to go to bed.
  • Make their bedtime snack light and healthy, not heavy and greasy-no big meals within 2 hours of bedtime.
  • Set a routine and do it exactly the same way every night. . . a bath or shower, reading, listening to quiet music, dimming the lights-and no screen time for the hour before bed! A routine trains their bodies to get ready for sleep.
