Principal's Message

Happy September DT Families!
The student's pictured above are our August Character Trait Winners! These students truly lived out the trait of RESPECT as we kicked off our year. They were nominated by their classroom teachers and special areas teachers. Last Friday, we held a special Character Convocation to honor them. At lunch on Friday, we had a special scrolling Power Point with their pictures and an explanation of why they were nominated.

We have a many great things going on here at Delaware Trail this month. Our Dog Jog Kick Off will be Friday September 9th at the end of the day in our gym. Dog Jog will be the morning of September 16th in the morning. Dog Jog is our ONLY fundraiser for our Parent Teacher Support Group this year. I encourage your support of this event.

Enjoy the long weekend,
Mrs. Greene

Volunteer Background Check Summary - Process Change by State Late Spring 2016
BCSC uses the Indiana State Police Department to run limited background checks on our visitors and volunteers. Along with many other schools and organizations, we use this system because there is no charge. The background checks are processed using the individual's name, birthdate, race and gender.
Occasionally the background check search results come back instantaneously, however recently the majority of searches result in a manual review of the information by the State. Late spring the Indiana State Police Department changed their process on how they run the limited background checks and are
now looking more closely at each individual to ensure accuracy. Due to this change, manual reviews are much more common and are taking, at times, up to four weeks to process at the State level.
Due to the State's efforts to be more thorough and accurate when processing background checks, we also are receiving a number of reports back from the State indicating that individuals are being recommended for fingerprints because the "subject of search" has multiple potential matches. Simply
put this means there is more than one person with that name and the Indiana State Police Department cannot determine which person we are requesting information on even with the DOB and other identifying information provided. If a visitor or volunteer chooses to go ahead with the fingerprinting
process in order to process their background check, it can be costly and take an additional two weeks for processing. As another option when this happens, we offer the choice of completing a second background check through Safe-Hiring Solutions for $12.95. This usually only takes 3 days. Safe-Hiring
Solutions is the company BCSC uses to process the required employment background checks. Safe-Hiring is able to process the background check using additional information such as an address from the volunteer. This narrows the search down and allows the individual to be identified more easily. The
State system does not allow us to include any additional information in an effort to narrow the search.
Due to the recent changes at the State level with the processing of the background checks, BCSC is investigating other means of processing volunteer background checks. We have thousands of volunteers in our district and it is still our intention to be able to process a majority without any cost to
the volunteer.

The BEST and EASIEST way to order is online and you will find the instructions for sending the link for online ordering to your family and friends in the packet. Online orders will be delivered directly to the one ordering by mail in 2-3 weeks. If the paper order form is used, the order form and money need to be returned by September 28th to your school. Influenza vs. Cold vs. Seasonal Allergies
&
The Importance of Flu Shots
As we say goodbye to summer the signs of fall start to appear. The temperature gets cooler and the leaves begin to change colors as they fall from the trees. Along with the fall season comes the dreaded flu season. As the weather changes, you or your child may start to experience sneezing, sniffles, and a sore throat and start to question whether it's a cold, seasonal allergies, or influenza, commonly known as the flu. It can be difficult to tell them apart because many of the symptoms are similar, but understanding the differences will help you choose the best treatment.
Cold, flu, and seasonal allergies all affect your respiratory system but each condition has key symptoms that set them apart. Colds and the flu are caused by different viruses whereas allergies are caused by your immune system reacting to a trigger, or allergen, which is something you are allergic to (Ex: Pollen, pet dander).
Both cold and flu can lead to a runny/stuffy nose, congestion, cough, and sore throat. However, with the flu, symptoms tend to be more severe. The flu can also cause a high fever that last for 3-4 days, along with a headache, fatigue and general aches and pains. These symptoms are less common with a cold, although young children can experience a fever with a cold.
Allergies occur when you are exposed to an allergen/trigger and the immune cells in your nose and airways overreact to these harmless substances by releasing histamine. Histamine causes the delicate respiratory tissues to swell and your nose may become stuffy or runny. Allergies can also cause itchy, watery eyes which normally do not occur with a cold or flu.

If you believe you or your child may have the flu and the symptoms are severe or become severe, please seek medical attention immediately to avoid complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia among others. Prevention is the key to dealing with the flu season. The BEST way to prevent the spread of germs is to properly wash your hands often, as well as avoiding close contact with anyone who may have the flu, and getting the flu vaccine every year.
The flu is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a recent study showed that the flu vaccination was associated with a 74% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations of children during the 2010-2012 flu seasons. It is especially important that individuals who are at greater risk of developing serious flu complications (young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions) get vaccinated yearly. The CDC recommends that individuals be vaccinated as soon as a vaccine becomes available, if possible by October. It takes about two weeks for the body to produce antibodies to provide protection against the flu. For further information regarding the flu, please consult a physician and/or visit the CDC website at   http://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm.

Body Safety Parent Preview Night:
Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 - 7:00 at Eagle Elementary (cafe)
Parents are invited to attend this meeting to learn about the age-appropriate lessons that will be taught to your children this school year by the elementary school counselors. Unfortunately, recent counts show that sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe. As a result, our children need to be taught assertiveness and self-protection skills to prevent such tragedies. This program is presented in a non-threatening, informative way.

Parents, please join us so that you can see the videos and hear about the lessons that will be presented at each grade level. For the lessons we will be using the same videos as last year for all grades with the exception of 4th grade.  A new video will be used this year.
