Jeff Lorber Fusion Tuesday, June 26, 8pm World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street
Trailblazing keyboardist Jeff Lorber performs his prolific jazz fusion. By the late 1970's Philadelphia's own Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion - a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R & B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, OR club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms. Matt Bergheiser serves as Executive Director of University City District (UCD), a partnership of universities, health systems, large and small businesses and community groups dedicated to the notion of a vibrant University City. The nonprofit organization concentrates its work from 30th Street to 50th Street in West Philadelphia, and invests in world-class public spaces, addresses public maintenance and public safety issues, brings life to commercial corridors, implements destination events, promotes job growth and innovation, and connects low income residents to career opportunities.
Matt joined University City District in July 2009 and, during his tenure, UCD has developed and opened The Porch at 30th Street Station, launched the West Philadelphia Skills Initiative, expanded its clean and safe work to focus on the rehabilitation of derelict properties, and grown its operating budget by more than thirty-five percent.
Previously, Matt served as Philadelphia Regional Director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, overseeing a $6 million annual grant-making budget in the city and surrounding counties. From 2001 to 2006, he was Executive Director of the business improvement district in Trenton, NJ, working to revitalize downtown Trenton by redeveloping commercial properties, launching social ventures, and spearheading efforts to attract residents and visitors.
Matt currently serves as a trustee for the Community College of Philadelphia, and as a member of the Mayor's Council on College and Career Success. He received a BA from Princeton University in 1991, and earned his MBA in 1996 from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. |
