The Freedom Advocate
Greetings!

The Dream Act. Is this a Dream....or a Nightmare?

Texas' support of financial aid programs that reward high-achieving students irrespective of immigration status acknowledges that such programs ultimately benefit the state by contributing to the development of its future. Furthermore, Texas' commitment is rare when compared to other states.  However, we need similar policies implemented at the federal level.  For that to occur, it will take unprecedented cooperation between both political parties, both branches of Congress, and the White House.

The momentum behind comprehensive immigration reform not only reflects the wants and needs of the population, but also an acknowledgment that Immigrants living and working in the US without authorization are earning far less, paying much less in taxes, and contributing significantly less to the U.S. economy than they would if they were given the opportunity to gain legal status or earn citizenship. By providing children brought to this country illegally - who have grown up here and know no other home besides the United States - a commonsense path to citizenship, we empower them to stimulate the economy by obtaining college degrees, buying homes, starting companies, and creating jobs.  To put it in real-world terms, according to a 2009 RAND study, a 30-year Mexican immigrant woman who graduates from college will pay $5,300 more in taxes and cost $3,900 less in government expenses each year than if she had dropped out of high school. Those figures amount to an annual fiscal benefit of more than $9,000 every year, money that can be put toward the education of other students. Similarly, a single person with a bachelor's degree who earns an average of $60,000 of taxable income will contribute $9,640 to taxes and welfare annually; and in a 40-year span he/she will have contributed $385,000.

Moiss E. Molina High School

Education is Freedom has helped me so much. All of my college bound fellow classmates, me included, frequently visit the EIF office. If we aren't completing college applications, then we are applying for scholarships. My EIF advisor Ms. Luna is fantastic and she helps us so much with everything. She consistently motivates us by encouraging us to apply to numerous 4 year universities as well as applying for relevant scholarships. Words can't begin to describe the gratitude that the students of Molina High School have for Ms. Luna.

When I graduate high school, I plan on attending Concordia College in Austin, Texas to study pre-med. Once I obtain my bachelors degree, I will continue my education so I can begin my career in nursing.

Thank you so much Ms. Luna for your time and everything that you have done and what you will do for all of the students at our school.

Education is Freedom & Ms. Luna - You're great!

The program was built and modeled after the White House Fellows Program, one of the world's most prestigious opportunities. Like the White House Fellows Program, the MIFP focuses on preparing motivated students to become the leaders of tomorrow.
