See what's happening at Eagle Elementary
August 5, 2016
Eagle Parents:

The first full week is in the books and the kids did a great job! They are still a little tired in Grades K and 1 but they are slowly adjusting to the long day! The older students are doing a great job so far modeling good behavior and helping our younger students with procedures and directions. This week all students did their beginning of year DIBELS Assessment. The DIBELS is an assessment we use to measure reading fluency and reading comprehension skills at the elementary grades. Students read various passages and teachers track their rate of reading as well as errors and get a baseline score.  In grades 2 and above, the focus is on fluency while in grades K-1 a focus on phonemics and letter naming is key.  Students will be assessed on three occasions this year and also some will be monitored every couple of weeks to provide feedback.  Your teacher will be sharing more with you at conferences this fall.

In the next couple of weeks, you will be hearing a lot about the Eagle Fun Run. About 13 years ago we started the Fun Run as a way to provide the kids with a fun day, to focus on healthy living and exercise, and to come together to do one fundraiser for our school. To this day, this is the only major fundraiser we will do. We have always told our students and parents that we will work very hard on the Fun Run and then not badger parents all year selling items as we know many of you have to do this additionally for youth sports.  You will be receiving information from our PSG in a couple of weeks.  This will come home in a packet with your child. Students will be encouraged to have family members, neighbors, extended family and friends sponsor them for the Fun Run. Each grade level will have 30-40 minutes to run laps on the track. It is a fun day and great way to raise money for the school. The Eagle PSG then meets and works with the teachers to decide how to best maximize the money raised so it benefits all students. In years past, items such as the playground, new computers, new projectors, field trips, T-shirts for Field Day, Whiteboards for class and many other great items have been purchased. We hope you can join us for this great day on September 2nd!

We hope you have a great weekend!! I am very excited to finally say Go Colts!!  It's hard to get excited about pre-season football but it's better than nothing!!

Media News:
Do you have some spare time and would like to work with the awesome students at Eagle Elementary? The library is looking for 3 volunteers. We have one morning spot on Tuesdays from 9:00-11:05 and two afternoon spots Tuesday and Friday from 1:00-2:50. Activities would include but not limited to shelving books, labeling books, and helping students check out materials. We truly appreciate our volunteers and couldn't run the library without them. If you would like to help, please contact Mrs. Bonness ( [email protected] ) or Mrs. Green ( [email protected] )

Thank you.

Counselor's Corner

August Character Trait:

Welcome to the 2016 - 2017 school year! As is our tradition in BCSC, we will take time throughout each month to focus on our character traits. We know that learning extends beyond academics and includes the ability to take responsibility for oneself, consider others' feelings, stick with difficult tasks, and more. Our kids need both social smarts and academic smarts to be successful in life.

During August, we will focus on the character trait of RESPECT. Respect is showing kindness and courtesy towards others. This month's character trait lessons will focus on how to use respect when addressing conflicts. Conflict or disagreement is normal and often happens when children get together. However, hurtful words, gestures, or physical attacks are unacceptable ways to deal with conflict and disagreement at school. Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult
situations and prevent bullying.

The program being used by all BCSC elementary schools is called Kelso's Choice. This program helps teach students effective ways to deal with conflict. Students will be taught that if they have a big problem they are to get help from a grown-up right away, but that for small problems they need to try 2 of Kelso's Choices before going to a grownup for help. The wheel of Kelso's choices (below) is what children will be encouraged to use. Please talk with your children about the many choices they have to work out conflicts and discuss different situations where they can choose the various options to solve a conflict. More information is available on the Eagle website.

"If we were meant to talk more than listen, we would have two mouths and one ear." - Mark Twain

A focus during this month's character trait lesson will be a review of the definition of bullying, rules against bullying, and ways to help (being an "upstander") when bullying happens. The definition of bullying has 3 parts: the actions are intentional, repeated, and there is an imbalance of power. The imbalance of power can be related to physical size or the fact that the target of the bullying feels helpless to get the bullying to stop. Our rules against bullying are:

  • We will not bully others.
  • We help students who are bullied
  • We will include students who are easily left out.

Body Safety Parent Preview Night
Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 6:00 - 7:00
 at Eagle Elementary (cafeteria)

Parents are invited to attend this meeting to learn about the age-appropriate lessons that will be taught to your children this school year by the elementary school counselors. Unfortunately, recent counts show that sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe. As a result, our children need to be taught assertiveness and self-protection skills to prevent such tragedies. This program is presented in a non-threatening, informative way.

Parents, please join us so that you can see the videos and hear about the lessons that will be presented at each grade level. For the lessons we will be using the same videos as last year for all grades, with the exception of 4th grade: A different video will be used this year.

Body and Personal Safety Program

The school counselor will be conducting body and personal safety lessons with students in grades K-5 the week of November 7.  Unfortunately, sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe.  Through these lessons, we will provide children the opportunity to learn assertive self-protection skills, differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate touches, and identify people to whom they can go for help. Students in grades K - 3 will learn the appropriate names of male and female private body parts, and anatomically correct dolls will be shown.  All students will participate in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rose or Mr. Hoover.
Parents, please check the Flyer Folder for important information regarding body safety and how to discuss this topic with your child.

Students will attend the lesson with their grade level.  The schedule is anticipated to be:
