Hello from Mr. Hoover

Eagle Parents:

Welcome back and a Happy 2016! The students had an outstanding week back! The students were very focused and ready to get started! We had a fun spirit day today....Pajama Day! The kids always enjoy this one! See below for some great news that was announced this week!

ISTEP + 2015 Results:
This week BCSC learned some outstanding news about how well our staff and students did on last year's ISTEP+. As you recall, each Spring students in Grades 3-5 take the ISTEP+ Assessment in language and math. Although this is just one measurement of success, it is one that allows us to determine how well our students are learning the new College and Career Readiness Indiana Standards. We receive information about our district and our school. I am very proud to announce the following:

Out of over 290 school corporations:

  1. BCSC was ranked number 3 in the State of Indiana for students passing both language and math assessments.
  2. BCSC was ranked 4th in the State of Indiana for students passing language arts.
  3. BCSC was ranked 1st in the State of Indiana for students passing math!!!
  4. Eagle had an overall language passing rate of 91.1% and overall math passing rate of 88.7%.
  5. Our of 1047 elementary schools in Indiana, Eagle Elementary was ranked number 23 placing our students in the top 2.2 % of all elementary schools!
  6. All BCSC schools did an outstanding job and collectively helped us reach these levels.

I cannot say how proud I am of our students and staff. Achievement at this level requires more than hard work. It requires excellent families, students, and staff from each area. Undoubtedly our classroom assistants, office staff,, cafeteria staff and custodial staff have so much to do with our results! They do all the little things that sometimes get overlooked! We also have the best teachers around! This is a celebration for all of BCSC and the community!

Have a great weekend
Mr. H

High Ability Identification for 2016-2017

Identification for High Ability programming for the next school year will begin later this month and be concluded by Spring Break. In 1st grade, students who met specific criteria on the CogAT administered in November, will proceed further in the identification process and parent permission will be required for further assessment which will occur in February. Results of the CogAT are available from the school counselor, if requested. Identification of 5th grade students for middle school placements will begin in February and parent permission will be required for Language Arts assessments. All 5th grade students will participate in math placement assessments. A parent whose child has not been recommended for the assessment process but has evidence of strong, high ability qualities/performance, should contact the school principal to discuss the appropriateness of assessment. Additional questions about the High Ability program can be directed to Julie Van Liew, Coordinator of Curriculum and Special Programs at 852-5726.
Character Trait for January:  INTEGRITY

The character trait for the month of January is INTEGRITY: doing what you are supposed to do, even when no one is looking.   Integrity is something we develop on the inside-an inner drive to do what is right for ourselves and others without expecting a reward or credit in return.   During character trait lessons I have had students ask how we can tell if someone is a person of integrity, since their actions may not always be seen.   We usually think of people who have integrity as those who own up to mistakes-even if no one else may have noticed the mistake in the first place, and people who have given us no reason to think that they are a different person to our face than they are behind our back.   During this month's character trait lessons, we'll focus on how we can show integrity with our words and actions.   The stories we will be reading include characters who realize that honesty is best, even when it is difficult.
