See what's happening at Eagle Elementary
November 4, 2016
Eagle Parents:

Great week of weather and a great week of school! The week presented some distraction opportunities for the students with Halloween on Monday and possibly the greatest World Series ever being finalized this week! Go Cubs! What a game! Needless to say, the students and staff did a great job staying focused and working hard. Many of you have begun to transfer from your Fall sports to you winter sports and this time is extra busy as many overlap. The next few weeks before Thanksgiving will keep the students moving. Next week we have our Grade 5 concert as well as Grandparents Day! See the Flyer for more information. Today we also celebrated our Fun Run lap winners with an end-of-day celebration. We will also be having a coin drive next week to be donated to help families in Brownsburg!

Have a great weekend!

Mr. H.

Counselor's Corner

November Character Trait: COMPASSION

Our character trait for the months of November is COMPASSION. Compassion means being kind to others. In life we can't be "just me" people: Because we are surrounded by others, we need to be "thinking of others" people. This means that we take notice of others' feelings and needs. For example, if someone has a lot to carry, we can open the door for them.  If a student drops something, we can help them pick it up. If someone is sad, we can try to talk to them about their problem and cheer them up.

Body and Personal Safety Program

The school counselor will be conducting body and personal safety lessons with students in grades K-5 the week of November 7.  Unfortunately, sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe.  Through these lessons, we will provide children the opportunity to learn assertive self-protection skills, differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate touches, and identify people to whom they can go for help. Students in grades K - 3 will learn the appropriate names of male and female private body parts, and anatomically correct dolls will be shown.  All students will participate in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rose or Mr. Hoover.
Parents, please check the Flyer Folder for important information regarding body safety and how to discuss this topic with your child.

Students will attend the lesson with their grade level.  The schedule is anticipated to be:

Kindergarten
Mrs. Mybeck's and Mrs. Collins'classes: Monday, November 7
Mrs. Pacey's and Mrs. Courtney's classes: Tuesday, November 8
Mrs. Ruppel's and Mrs. Nolz's classes: Thursday, November 10
1st Grade: Monday, November 7
2nd Grade: Tuesday, November 8
3rd Grade: Thursday, November 10
4th Grade: Tuesday, November 8

Fall Reading Challenge

What a great week to have the Fall Reading Challenge Celebration! 509 Eagle students chose to keep their minds sharp and read for at least 10 of the days over fall break. That means 70% of our school was able to attend the reading celebration on Tuesday. I am so proud of our students. They had a great time playing yard games outside and enjoying the beautiful weather. Thank you for all of your support at home and encouraging your children to READ!

Holiday Assistance Coin Drive

We will be having our annual coin drive November 7-11th.  The money raised during this week will be given to Connection Pointe Church to help fund programming that benefits families in need of holiday assistance.

This year we're adding a twist to the coin drive: Each grade level will have two containers-one that adds to the total weight of the grade level's coins, and one that subtracts from the total weight of the grade level's coins.  Students will put contributions for their own grade level in the red container, but they can also choose to put money in the milk jug for another grade level, decreasing the weight value of another grade level's coins!  The grade level with the most coins by weight at the end of the week will get an extra recess with Mr. Hoover and Mrs. Rose!
From the Front Office

We have accumulated many items in Lost & Found. Please have your Students check for anything missing from home, such as lunch boxes, jackets, sweatshirts, etc. These items will be donated at Christmas Break if no one claims them.
Eagle School Goals

ISTEP: Achieve higher in language arts and math with minimums of 90% in each area
SRI: All students grow by a minimum of 200 points each year or one grade level
Attendance: We will have 97% or higher student and staff attendance each year
Four-Star School: We will be named a Four Star School for the school year
Achievement Gaps: We will work to minimize achievement gaps between gender, ethnicity, special education and socioeconomic status to less than 5%.
Cafeteria News

Did you know? Students may enter the building early at 8:30 a.m. to eat a nutritious breakfast in the cafeteria before the start of our school day. Studies show that student academic performance and behavior is better among students who eat a healthy breakfast. Breakfast is purchased on the student ID just like lunch. What a great way to start the day! Breakfast costs $1.50 and $0.30 for reduced.
Parents: When visiting your child for lunch we wanted to remind you that a guest lunch tray is $3.40. That does not include
any extras you may pick up. Small bills (1's, and 5's) are much appreciated as we have limited funds to make change.

Random Acts of Flowers

Eagle Elementary is working with the Interact Club Seniors at Brownsburg High School with accepting donations for Vases. The Vases will be used for a program called Random Acts of Flowers and will be donated to local hospitals. The Vases that are donated will be filled with flowers and then donated to patients that have extended hospital stays. Eagle will have a donation box in the Front Office. A member of the Club will stop by the School twice a month to collect the Vases.
5th Grade Music Program Coming Soon After Fall Break!!

Dear Eagle Parents,
If your student is in 5th grade, please put Thursday, November 10th on your calendar as the night for their evening music presentation.  We are working on a great show for you, a program of the decades titled "Jukebox Time Machine". We plan to sing, dance and play the night away with some awesome and entertaining music!  The performance will begin at 6:30 PM in the Eagle Gymnasium. Students should be in their classrooms by 6:15pm in order to be ready for the 6:30pm program.

For the children's attire, I am asking that the children try and duplicate various decades with some touches of fashion that correspond to the 20th century decades. The years are assigned as follows:
Mrs. Rock - the 1930's
Mrs. Welch - the 1940's
Mr. Dehr - the 1950's
Mrs. Beebe - the 1960's
Mrs. Barbee - the 1970's
Mrs. Burns - the 1980's

Please understand that I am not asking for full costumes, but please try and portray some aspect of your decade's fashion in the attire that you choose. If you are looking for ideas, you can go to GOOGLE IMAGES and type in "1940's women's fashion" or "1970's men's fashion" and it will show pictures of some ideas for you to think about.

Lastly, most of the students have elected to participate in some extra group or ensemble that will add to the performance, therefore, attendance is very important. These performances are like the final project at the end of a unit of study. I hope you will make every effort to have your child here and that you will come along to support him/her.

A separate flyer should be coming home after fall break with a request for concert assistance from parent volunteers.  Be on the lookout for the signup form and let me know if you can help!

We hope to see your whole family at the concert!

School Nurse

Outdoor recess is a vital part of the school day. It is a time for students to burn off some of that energy they have stored up all morning, get some exercise and socialize with their peers. Now that the weather is getting colder, please remember to send your students to school with cold weather attire. Winter coats, hats, gloves and long pants are most appropriate on these cold days along with shoes or boots and socks. Corporation policy uses a feels-like temperature of 10 degrees or less as the cut off for deciding if recess will be inside or outside. If your child does not have the appropriate winter clothing, please let the school nurse know so that we can help all of our students stay warm during the colder months. Thank you for your assistance and continued support! We are looking forward to a healthy and happy winter season!
