STEAM: Life Jacket Challenge
|
For the last two weeks, Mrs. Grimes' 8th grade classes studied the Law of Conservation of Matter, and they studied density. Their Life Jacket Challenge gave the students an opportunity to view these concepts from another level.
Our 8th graders researched the history and importance of life jackets through various PDF documents to prepare for their first STEAM challenge of the year. The students were required to collaborate with their team members to design a life jacket for a can of soup. They could only use a set number of materials and had to explain how all of their materials were going to be used in their design.
All of our 8th graders did such a great job and produced some really creative designs. We are so proud of all of them!
This project integrated science, math, history, research, writing, and the arts!
We also began preparing our students for the Regional Science Fair and the National History Day Competition, this week. We cannot wait to see what they will produce. They never cease to amaze us!

ECHO: Early College Holistic Outreach
|
On Friday, August 27, we welcomed a new advisement program to GCEC. Georgia College Advisors will be meeting with our 7th, 8th, and 9th graders each month to prepare them for the college experience.
Each grade level has 2-3 academic advisors, and these advisors will work with the same group during the 3-year period. They will focus on such topics as "Why College? Is College for Me?", "Goal Setting & Perseverance", "Study Skills & Time Management", and "College Selection Research".
Academic Advisors:
7th Grade: Mrs. Erin Weston & Mrs. Nadirah mayweather
8th Grade: Ms. Christine Amezquita & Mrs. Debi Lastinger
9th Grade: Mrs. Wanda Johns, Mrs. Jessica Kennedy, and Mrs. Tamette Goddard
We are thrilled about this opportunity for our students!
