Diocese of L.A. to host bishop of Puerto Rico
The diocesan community is invited to a special bilingual (English/Spanish) Eucharist on Sept. 26 to celebrate an official visit from Bishop Rafael Luis Morales of Puerto Rico. Morales will be in the Diocese of Los Angeles Sept. 24 - 27. Bishop Morales will preach and Bishop John Harvey Taylor will preside. The collection will benefit the episcopal diocese of Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. A reception will follow the service, which will be held at St. John's Cathedral, Los Angeles.

Bishop Taylor and his wife Canon Kathy Hannigan O'Connor will host Morales at the Episcopal residence during his stay. Bishop Morales will visit several institutions and organizations of the diocese during his stay.

Bishop Taylor invites and encourages all to attend the Eucharist in support of Puerto Rico. Referring to the limited U.S. government response to last year's disastrous storm, Bishop Taylor said, “Puerto Rico was not made to feel at home in the aftermath of the destructive hurricane. Bishop Rafael and the people of Puerto Rico have a home here in the diocese of Los Angeles.”

Additional support for the Diocese of Puerto Rico may be offered at  www.EDLAgives.org.

Rafael Luis Morales, seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Puerto Rico, was consecrated on July 22, 2017. He previously served as a parish priest in Toa Baja, a suburb of Puerto Rico's capital city of San Juan, and as head of the Episcopal Cathedral School.
Diocesan Reconciliation Process
Reconciliation process continues with small-group structured dialogue sessions

A message from The Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy, canon to the ordinary

The diocesan reconciliation process led by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center has been working since the beginning of the year to help heal divisions that resulted in the conflict over property matters involving St. James’ Church, Newport Beach. The process began with information-gathering from those affected by the St. James matter, followed by workshops on dealing with conflict in the church and fostering healthy congregations, which were attended by more than 100 church members, clergy and diocesan staff.

The third phase began in June with a series of small-group structured dialogue sessions in which participants were encouraged to discuss the conflict, their own roles in it, and their reactions. This work will continue Sept. 13 – 15 with 13 sessions to be held at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in Los Angeles. Signups for these sessions are now open; all are invited to take part. Advance registrations are required, and may be made here. Participants will need to fill out a short form and choose a specific session (each is an hour and a half in length).

Next in the process is the healing phase, which will begin with a large-group structured dialogue on Saturday, Oct. 27, 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. An additional large-group dialogue is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2019 (times and location to be announced). At these sessions, people who have been in conflict with each other will have opportunities to speak directly to each other in a supportive environment, to forgive and be forgiven.

The last major part of the process will be a problem-solving phase that will endeavor to build healthy systems that may prevent future conflicts by increasing understanding and trust. This phases will be carried out at two large-group sessions, scheduled for Feb. 23 and March 9, 2019. (If a third meeting is needed for the healing phase, it will be held on Feb. 23, and the problem-solving meetings will be held on March 9 and March 30.)

In the spring of 2019, the process will conclude with a final report and a concluding worship service; dates to be determined.

The Lombard Mennonite Peace Center will provide a progress report on the reconciliation process to the Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 meeting of Diocesan Convention.

Bishop John Harvey Taylor, Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce and I encourage you to prayerfully take part in the coming small-group and large-group sessions. We have all been much impressed by the skill, care and discretion with which the facilitators from the Lombard Mennonite Center have handled the first parts of this process, and we look forward to continuing this journey with you in the spirit of reconciliation and in hopes that we may go forward as effective servants of God in our congregations, our diocese and the world.

Stillpoint sponsors retreat on Celtic spirituality
Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality will present “The Celtic Way of Praying: A Way of Be-ing” with Sr. Carol Quinlivan, Ph.D., on Saturday, Sept. 15, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Pacific Palisades. The Celtic Christian propensity to find the divine in all created nature speaks with uncanny relevance to many of the concerns of our present era. Like the endlessly intertwining threads of the Celtic knot these ancient Christians experienced living and praying as inseparable, giving rise to a profound sense of belonging. The ancient wisdom, visual images, poetry, prayers, and blessings of Celtic spirituality take us beyond words to nourish our imagination and restore what we have neglected or forgotten. Quinlivan, a sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, is a spiritual and retreat director with extensive experience in group and individual spiritual formation. She received her Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute, focusing on Celtic Spirituality through the lens of Jungian psychology. She is a professor at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles and Retreat Director at Serra Retreat Center in Malibu. Cost of the retreat is $58 ($68 with lunch included); a $10 discount is available for registration before Sept. 1. To register, click here. St Matthew's Episcopal Church is located at 1031 Bienveneda Avenue, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

Greta Ronningen to co-lead retreat in New York
Greta Ronningen of the San Gabriel-based Community of Divine Love and Bernard Delcourt of the Order of the Holy Cross will lead "Living Love Mystically and Apostolically" Sept. 20 - 23 at Holy Cross Monastery in Westpark, New York. During this retreat participants will explore the stories of the Beguines, 13th century women who sought to live the apostolic life, and how they might inspire our lives today. These women left lives of comfort in order to live love with the suffering of humanity and to live love in mystical union with God. The Beguine authors were prepared to die if necessary to ‘go and tell’ their stories. At the retreat, Ronningen and Delcourt will resurrect their stories, poetry, and theology. Ronningen is a monk and founding member of Community of Divine Love, an Episcopal monastery that is committed to the contemplative life and dedicated to works of justice and acts of mercy. She is senior chaplain in the Los Angeles County Jail System. She holds a master’s degree in spiritual formation from Claremont School of Theology. She is a yoga teacher, public speaker, retreat leader, and the author of Free on the Inside – Finding God Behind Bars. Delcourt is the prior of Holy Cross Monastery and a spiritual director. He used to walk in the Grand Beguinage of Leuven, Belgium as a child and has been fascinated by the life and spirituality of the Beguines for the last 10 years. For reservations, contact Lori Callaway, guest house manager, or contact her at [email protected] or 845.384.6660, ext. 1 Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Fee: $385 (deposit: $100).
