 Checking in with 2011 Resolutions

Greetings!

Welcome to the Body in Mind Nutrition Newsletter!

As you enjoy the sprinkling of warmer days and start to shed your winter coat, you may be reflecting on your resolutions with a bit of frustration.  This month's newsletter is designed to encourage you to be kind to yourself as you continue to support your best health!  Take good care of yourself!!
The Essential Peace for Real Behavior Change

I received a thrilling phone call today from a client who taught me a valuable lesson.  She worked with me several months ago and then attended my course as well.  I watched her absolutely blossom with each passing week.  She called me today after leaving her doctor's office saying, I am calling you today before I even call my husband!  She wanted to tell me that she has lost 25 pounds, 2 dress sizes, has been removed from all of her medications to control her blood pressure and spent most of Sunday afternoon playing frisbee golf with her family and friends.  She sounded so peaceful!  But in the middle of all of this excitement about how her life is unfolding, she said, "I  was making it all way too hard before!"

I think the biggest mistake we make when we strike out to make changes in our lives, is that we white knuckle our way through it with "discipline" and "will power".  We push ourselves around with such harsh and punishing words and tactics.  We create rules for our eating that leave us feeling deprived and exercise plans which leave us feeling tortured.  With the first inevitable set back or slip up, we begin to feel the self-doubt creep in.  We may try to get an even tighter grip on ourselves just before we give up and our old habits return.

Many times the missing ingredient of a successful and sustainable program to change habits is self-compassion.  Leading with compassion rather than punishment will offer self awareness and inner strength which will provide you with the staying power that is essential for real change.  Small successes need to be acknowledged and celebrated.  Noticing what you are doing right will allow you to continue your efforts to eat mindfully, make smart nutritional choices, and be physically active.  When you wake up each morning, state an aspiration which is very achievable for the day (for example, I am not going to distract myself while I eat lunch today).  When you are going to sleep each night, acknowledge a successful experience in your day (for example, I was able to have a high-protein snack this afternoon so I didn't feel so out of control at dinner tonight).  This will increase the self awareness and inner strength necessary for your success!!

Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation.               -Henry Ward Beecher
