The FACTivist
February 2014

FACT's new statewide, monthly newsletter for youth members will be titled The FACTivist!

Congratulations to Nellie T. of Northwestern High School for coming up with the newsletter title that received the most votes from other FACT members! And, thank you to everyone that voted for a newsletter title in the January newsletter survey.

VOICE YOUR OPINION

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (The FDA) is launching a new youth tobacco prevention ad campaign called "The Real Cost".

Take a look at the new advertisements that you will soon see on TV, in magazines, and online and tell us:

Do you think that these new ads will prevent
youth from using
tobacco products?

FACTabulous FACTivism

Members of the City of Milwaukee FACT group did a FACTabulous job completing the custom "Big Tobacco Trash" FACTivism!

The group raked leaves in their community to fill the large trash bags and created an outdoor display that was easily viewable by the public.

TOBACCO PREVENTION UPDATES

  • Tobacco companies are being required to create advertisements that are finally honest about the harm that their products cause. Big Tobacco was found guilty of lying to the public about the dangers of smoking and their marketing to children by the U.S. Dept. of Justice back in 2006. These "corrective statement" ads will be seen on TV and in newspapers; it is unclear when we will begin seeing them.

  • Research has discovered that cigarettes are delivering even more addictive nicotine than they used to. Cigarettes designed to deliver more nicotine will be more difficult to quit using. Smokers who can't quit will die, on average, 13 years sooner than their peers. For more details, read this article.

Youth Board of Directors

Ever wondered what being a member of FACT's Youth Board of Directors is like? Veteran boardie Casey P. (pictured in the bottom left) from Franklin shares her experience here:

"When I became a part of FACT, I felt that I was able to help inform my peers about the dangers of tobacco while still having fun.  After being a part of the Youth Board of Directors for FACT, that feeling has been amplified.

In addition to completing FACTivisms, I am able to collaborate with other FACT Board Members from around the state!  Being able to talk to the other members has helped give me experience with working on a team. I would definitely suggest being a FACT Board Member if you're willing to put forth extra effort!"

Would you like to apply to serve on FACT's Youth Board of Directors? Watch for the application and more information next month!

GROUP SPOTLIGHT

The Rhinelander FACT group in northern Wisconsin includes members from their local middle and high schools. This group's FACTivism work earns a lot of attention from Oneida County's media outlets, including their meeting with State Senator Tom Tiffany (pictured with the group above) last December that was featured in at least two newspapers.  Their highest FACTivism points earner is Nicki M. with 8000 points. Marvelous work Rhinelander FACT!

CALL TO ACTION

Take some time with your FACT group to thank CVS Pharmacy for their decision to stop selling tobacco products in their stores by October 1, 2014.

Here are some ideas for how you can adapt some typical FACTivisms to show support for CVS's decision to put health ahead of money. You can earn points when you submit these FACTivisms on our website!

Members of the Two Rivers High School FACT group created a handmade thank you card and included a brief letter to praise CVS Pharmacy's decision. Group members Kyle and Austin personally delivered the card to their local CVS store's manager.

Take some pictures
of your group completing any of these FACTivisms and share them with us on the statewide FACT Facebook and Twitter pages. We might use your photos in the next newsletter or in our own public posts online!
