Rector's Reflections

Turn On. Tune In. Wake Up!

In the 1960's people were urged to turn on, tune in, and drop out to leave the material world behind in favor of an alternate reality. In today's gospel, Jesus also urges us to tune into an alternative to the material world, one he called the coming of the Son of Man. In Jesus' person, the dominion of God comes into the world, and the risen Christ continues to give us abundant signs of its presence. Jesus commands his followers not to drop out of the world, but to be on the lookout for him in it.
Christians await the second coming of Christ, the parousia, when we believe we will experience God's reign in its fullness. In the meantime, we live, in the words of some theologians, "already, but not yet." We look for glimpses of the dominion in the here and now. The season of Advent, and today's readings, are designed to help turn us on to the excitement and anticipation of God's reign in our lives and tune in to the infinite opportunities we have to participate in it. In other words, they want to wake us up!
St. Paul exhorts us in Sunday's second reading to lead lives of faithful obedience until the final day. He also challenges us to participate in God's dominion in the here and now, calling us to wake from sleep, to "put on Christ." Eyes wide open and wrapped in Christ, we are called to a new day. Isaiah describes his own vision: gathered by God, learning and teaching God's ways, walking in God's paths, beating swords into ploughshares and spears to pruning hooks. Wide-awake, active, and ready for encounters with Jesus, we may find God's dominion when and where we least expect it. [Sundays and Seasons, 2016]
Watching and Waiting...

P.S. This week I give thanks for all of you and was thankful for the presence of All the Saints musicians and worshipers at our Community Thanksgiving Service Tuesday at St. Katherine Drexel Roman Catholic Church.

Wolfeboro Reads

For December we will continue to gather Tuesdays, December 6th, 13th and 20th 4:00-5:30 pm at First Congregational Church Wolfeboro. We will not read one book, but each week a collection of things (provided) to allow people to participate as they are able at one, two or all three sessions. Join us as Pastors Bill and Gina guide our reflection and preparation for the incarnation during these Advent days.

Why should you have an Advent Wreath?

To prepare for the incarnation of Jesus during the season we call Advent, which comes from a Latin word and means "coming." Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year for the Church and begins this year on November 27th (think of it as the Church celebrating its New Year's Day). It begins each year on the Sunday closest to November 30th, which is the feast day of Saint Andrew the Apostle.

Some people mistakenly think that Advent is part of the Christmas celebration. But actually, Advent is a time of preparation all its own. For the Church, Christmas doesn't begin until the first Eucharist is celebrated on Christmas Eve, and the Twelve Days of Christmas continue until the Feast of Epiphany on January 6th. Advent is given to us as a time to prepare and quiet our souls for the coming of the Lord during a very busy secular season of shopping and selfishness.

Each week we light one more candle on a wreath of four candles to wait for Messiah, Jesus the Christ, Emanuel-God with us. The growing light in the darkness of late fall and early winter centers us and brightens our kitchen tables and hearts as we mark time with spiritual reflection and anticipation. If an advent wreath is not part of your preparation the month before Christmas, consider adding it and welcome the light!

P.S. The color of the candles or fanciness of the wreath is not important.

Office  Angels

Are you interested in helping out in the office?  There are a number of folks (male and female) who are on the office angel volunteer list and rotate to help in the office with bulletins each week, stuffing and folding for large mail campaigns, and filling in at the desk on days needed. We would like to add to the list so please contact Deb, at the office, 569-3453, or Arlene Salzgeber, 569-1907, for more information.
Celebrant

On Nov. 20th, the congregation at All Saints welcomed back The Rev. Jane Van Zandt as the Celebrant for The Last Sunday after Pentecost. Rev. Van Zandt, was filling in for Rev. Petersen who was on vacation.  Rev. Van Zandt, received smiles and laughs from the congregation when she commented that this was the first time she could remember serving as the Celebrant at All Saints, and not seeing service dogs as part of the congregation.  Thank-you Rev. Van Zandt for again serving as Celebrant at All Saints.

Community Thanksgiving Service

On Tuesday, Nov. 22nd, All Saints, St. Katharine Drexel, and the First Congregational Church Woleboro combined the three choirs, Celebrants, and Minister for a community Thanksgiving Service at St. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church.

In the above photo, the Music Director at All Saints, Holly Simons, leads the combined choirs with the beautiful hymn, Taste and See written by James E. Moore, Jr.  During her solo part of the hymn, Holly's beautiful voice filled the sanctuary.

In the photo below, The Rev. Gina M. Finocchiaro, The Rev. Bill Petersen, and Father Robert Cole join the congregation in the opening Hymn titled, At the Table of the World.

Nominating Committee for 2017 Annual Meeting
Dianne Wasmuth and Jack McLaughlin, as co-chairs of the Nominating Committee, are seeking volunteers to serve on this committee. If you would be interested in this short term commitment, please contact Dianne (569-3526) or Jack (569-6270).

The committee will be soliciting interest in filling three (3) positions on the Vestry and one (1) position as alternate delegate to the Lakes Region Convocation and Diocesan Convention. If you are interested in serving in these positions, we ask that you submit a Leadership Interest Application form which can be found in the following places: Parish Office; the bulletin board in the Parish Hall; and the table in the Narthex.

Thank you in advance for your interest.
Blessings,
Dianne and Jack

Linda Pacheco

Last Sunday, Nov. 20th,  our camera lens found Linda Pacheco selling Christmas wreaths.   The money raised from that project will help fund our preschool.  Linda is presently serving as chair of the preschool board. Linda is a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Altar Guild, and Episcopal Church Women, (ECW). In our community, Linda serves as chairwoman for the Festival of Trees. In the photo below, Linda and Pastor Bill enjoy a conversation during the summer fair this year.   Linda is another example of an  All Saint serving in a leadership role for our church.

Paul Dostie and Holly Simons performed a beautiful trumpet and piano arrangement, Come, Ye Thankful People, Come during the Prelude at the 10 A.M. service.

Please take a pamphlet which provides helpful suggestions for items to donate.
First Snow

Rev. Petersen stated in his Rector's Reflections, our liturgical calendar begins on the First Sunday of Advent.  This year that is November 27th.  On Monday, November 21st, our church was adorned with the first lovely snow of the year.
