Foodie Highlights: Summer 2012                                            Jan/Feb 2011
highlights-summer2012
A busy spring season brought numerous projects, starting with location assignments for the Georgia Straight, first at Hawksworth Restaurant for the cover of the coveted Golden Plates issue, then at the always brilliant Medina capturing Mother's Day Brunch. Due out in the Fall, Canada's Favourite Recipes was photographed for Whitecap Books, as well as an intriguing book on the raw food lifestyle, aptly named "Gorilla Food" for Arsenal Pulp Press. On the flip side, it was a (roasted) duck shoot for MBC Advertising, along with this thirst quenching union of frozen lime margarita and Corona for Mr.Mikes Restaurants. Finally and just recently, in the studio, an afternoon of Jenga, meticulously poising these Sensible Portions veggie straws in place.

Tips Tricks & Techniques

veggie fresh
The ever browning avocado has no mercy on a photo shoot (right up there with the bananas and apples) and certainly won't hesitate to tan helplessly, creating hours of photoshop re-touching. Enter "Fruit Fresh, used mostly for preserves, basically a mixture of citric acid and dextrose which draws the moisture out of the culprit retaining some dignity for it's 15 minutes of photo fame.

Faves

It's been a blueberry extravaganza at the Foodie Studio shooting these favorite gems for the B.C. Blueberry Council. Under the expert art direction of Fever Pitch Communications we created a series of photos honoring the blueberry, showcasing both the savory and sweet prospects of this powerful antioxidant.

Beverage

victorian lemonade
On set with the students of Vanarts, we spent the day shooting a variety of drinks, including this Victorian Lemonade. The perfect model for our location shoot, experimenting with reflective surfaces, controlled daylight, color theory, propping and a few food styling tricks (note the fake ice!)

Sweet Endings

lemon tartsA sucker for lemon, both visually and on my plate and despite being
a little bit of
a disaster to photograph (the shell literally disintegrated in transit to the plate) this lemon tart scores big time. A few styling tricks up our sleeves and plenty of backup we managed a few variation shots, including the pre-collapse "safe shot", a must
when shooting delicate finicky foods.

Last Course

feb2012 favesBrushing off the chilly "Junuary" blues here in Vancouver, I couldn't be any more ready
for summer than right now! We are so
fortunate to be surrounded by such an abundance of incomparable local produce. Top priority is to hit the local farmer's markets this summer and take full advantage of Mother Nature's bounty. Wishing you all a sunny summer and see you in the Fall.

Cheers!

Behind the Scenes

Kudos to Carol Jensson and Judie Glick (photographed here at the book launch) on the release of the New Granville Island Cookbook. I was particularly honored to photograph this book, I learned so much about the beauty and integrity of quality ingredients speckled in with some history behind this public market.
