The Fulcrum
 March 05, 2017 Edition
From the National Office

This winter, I had the opportunity to be warm at home in Hawai'i for a few days, while the cold season was brewing in the Northeast. Each day I got to witness some spectacular sunsets, whether from a porch or the beach. While sitting on the sand after a nice, long swim I had time to literally catch my breath, which reminded me to breathe and let go - to breathe and just be. As youth ministers and teachers, we sometimes forget about that "me time," while going full-speed ahead until May or June. Lent affords us the opportunity to stop, sit on the sand, breathe, and just be. Wherever or however you spend your desert time, may you find peace and calm, which are both necessary as we go about our work.

Social Justice - Now What?
The Blue Heart Campaign activity each program did this summer has truly
inspired LIFE Teams to spread the word about human trafficking. On February 13, Nolan Catholic High School's Viking LIFE Team (Fort Worth, TX) sponsored a week to raise awareness of human trafficking. Moderator Erica Duarte writes,

We had lots of signs at last night's basketball game (Shoot to End Human Trafficking, Block Human Trafficking), and the pre-game prayer included victims of human trafficking. The LIFErs hosted a shoot out during half time, and all the players and coaches wore the Blue Heart shirts as their warm ups. The band came, and community was built!!! We put a prayer up in the arena, and windows were surrounded by blue hearts with facts about human trafficking. They were up for the game and will stay up through Mass on February 16. The LIFE team is donating a blue flower arrangement for Mass, and we are including intentions for more awareness and of course for victims. It has been a good week!

Some moderators fled the winter and escaped to the warmer weather of San Antonio, TX for the National Mid-LIFE weekend February 3-4. Central Catholic High School hosted the group, and the location could not have been more perfect for some personal reflection time along the Riverwalk, group sharing with moderators from other regions, and hearing about new or different ways to engage our students. Andrés Novela, longtime moderator and former Coordinating Team member, was our keynote on Saturday, when he shared about how he goes about justice works. He provided some good suggestions for moderators by describing activities he plans for his students at Monsignor Pace in Miami, FL.

A highlight was dinner and a social at the Marianist Residence on St. Mary's campus. This afforded moderators the opportunity to reconnect with some Marianist mentors and to meet new Brothers in residence there. We are truly grateful for the warm hospitality of all the Marianists of San Antonio for a blessed weekend!

LIFE Team Happenings
Archbishop Riordan High School (San Francisco, CA)
Archbishop Riordan moderator, Leo Magnaye, writes,
The Riordan LIFE team spent the day on Monday 1/9 at the Marianist Community in Cupertino, CA. They were hosted by Brother Tom Redmond who led them in an interactive prayer service and presentation about "rekindling embers" from last semester. They spent the rest of the day with team building exercises, constructive reflection, and preparing for future MLCs. They concluded the day with a shared lunch with the Brothers and a group picture seen here. We thank the Community in Cupertino for their generous hospitality, especially Brother Tom for his time in planning for this wonderful and much needed Mid year retreat.

Chaminade College Preparatory (West Hills, CA)
Chaminade College Preparatory's LIFE Team created an 'Ohana Video with their LIFE Pacific & South communities. Thanks to moderator Amanda Wolff for sharing!
