December 2013

FROM THE COMMODRE
by Walter Caldwell

Walter 2013Wow. That year went by fast! I hope you all are having a great holiday season! We definitely are, but are getting antsy to get back on the water. Our boat is currently at what Beverly calls the "spa".

The Board elections are over and you will have a new, highly qualified Commodore beginning January 1st. I am looking forward to helping Scott fix all the things I messed up this past year! We have a great group ready to serve on the Board for 2014. But as I said at the annual meeting, we couldn't really go wrong with any that were on the ballot. My sincere thanks to all those that volunteered to let us put their names on the ballot. Thank you Scott, Charles, Marilyn, Terri, Chris, Christopher, Drew, Kevin, Leslie, Doug, Terry, Nicole, and Wyatt.

Speaking of the annual meeting, we had the best turnout that we've had in years - well ever since I've been really involved with GBCA. After cocktails and appetizers, we opened up the meeting with some introductions, then reported on finances, membership, regattas, and the election results. After that, we had some open discussions about membership sustainment, regatta participation, sponsorship and regatta formats and courses. Some lively discussion to be sure! Most of the topics are things that the Board discusses monthly, but we did get some new ideas for sponsorship and regatta participation. And we're going to try some new (or old) courses this year.

One of the things I'm excited about for 2014 is the Emerald Coast Regatta - a race from Galveston to Pensacola to be held May 23-30. GBCA has teamed up with Lakewood Yacht Club and Pensacola Yacht club to organize this regatta. The cruising boats will start on Friday, and the race boats on Saturday, hopefully arriving close together a few days later. Then it's party on, before returning home, staying longer, or continuing east and south. In order to generate interest and determine the turnout, you can sign up now with no obligation or payment. Go to the GBCA website or to www.regattanetwork.com/event/7428 for more info and to sign up.

Another new twist for 2014 will be the St. Patrick's Regatta, formerly known as the Spring Regatta. This will be a one-day regatta, March 15. That will leave Sunday to do all those chores you didn't do because you went sailing and partying on Saturday. The plan is to have one or two LONG races, like we used to do years ago. But this time I'll make sure there's enough cold beer left over for when the smaller boats get in! Stay tuned.

Finally I'd like to tell you what a fun and rewarding time it has been serving on the GBCA Board this past year. I've had great support from the Board members and from the members. Nobody could ask for a better bunch of people than the members of GBCA. If you are not already, I'd like to encourage you to get involved. This whole thing runs on the backs of volunteers, and the more we have, the less sore our backs are!

And with that, I pass the torch to Scotty! Have a great 2014 at The Place To Race!

Walter
2014 Immediate Past Commodore

LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED IN 2014?  VOLUNTEER FOR GBCA!
By Scott Lacy

Another year is just about over and I believe it has been another great year for GBCA! I have enjoyed my time as the Volunteer Coordinator on the Board of Governors. This club is made up of great Volunteers and we can always use more on R/C and after-race parties. If you are not racing and still want to be a part of this great Club, contact me or any Board member and we can put you to work!

I have been granted the opportunity to serve as Commodore for 2014 and look forward to the challenge. I hope to increase participation in racing as well as increase our membership. Without your membership, GBCA cannot provide the quality of racing that you expect.

This coming year is shaping up to be another great year for GBCA. The Icicles start just after the New Year and LYC and GBCA are teaming up for a race to Pensacola in May. Let's make this year another great year for GBCA and let us all be safe!
