Last week my world lost one of the most genuine, loving and compassionate spirits that ever graced this earth.  My wonderful friend, Kevin Rock, the son of my best friend, Marge Rock, died unexpectedly of heart failure at the age of 51.  Kevin inherited his mother's capacity for compassion and caring and was a teacher to me on the fine art of loving others.  He nursed both his mother and her husband, Don, in their last days and was a source of centeredness for all of us who witnessed their suffering.  He had the ability to cheer us even in the depths of our sorrow, to brighten even the darkest days.  I never heard him complain about how difficult his life was even when he was at his lowest.

I remember one night he called me at midnight asking me to come over because he was having a panic attack and couldn't sleep. I rushed over to his house and held him and stroked his legs as he cracked jokes about his affliction.  We cried, we laughed, we held on to each other the entire night and finally fell asleep on his couch.  I  felt such honor at having been there that night - it was humbling and sweet.

I never heard anyone say a negative word about Kevin - he was a gift to all who knew him. He was a counselor, a sage, a friend, an incredible brother and son and one of the most talented performers I have ever met.  He had a ribald sense of humor and, while he could get a bit raw with his wit, he never hurt anyone's feelings with it. He just loved to make people laugh.

Some of my greatest joy came when we were on stage together, particularly when we dedicated the New Day Club stage to Marge (see above picture).  Our last song was Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and that's what Kevin did. He made us all feel as if we were the most important person in the world because, in his eyes, we were.

Thank you, Kevin, for the love, the music, the laughter, the compassion, the sweetness and the heart so huge that it could hold no more.  I'll see you again, my friend.  Save a microphone and a Joy Girl's hat for me.  We're not done - this is only the beginning!

We are currently working through the book A Path with Heart by Jack Kornfield. You are invited to work through the book with us and offer your insights at the Circle. The June Circle is on Chapter 4, Necessary Healing-Healing the Body. Our May discussion was so involved that we didn't get to dig into the four specific areas of healing that Kornfield talks about. Therefore, we will focus on each of them individually over the summer. We all come to the Circle in our own unique space and receive the healing we are meant to receive.
